Martim Moniz Square

Martim Moniz (died 1147), was a Portuguese knight of noble birth, great-great-grandson of Ferdinand I, Emperor of All Hispania, and famous figure in the Siege of Lisbon in 1147.

According to the legend, Martim Moniz was a knight participating in the Christian invasion force, led by king Afonso I of Portugal, in the reconquest of the city of Lisbon, during the Reconquista. At one point in the siege of S緌 Jorge Castle, he saw the Moors closing the castle doors. He led an attack on the doors, and sacrificed himself by lodging himself in the doorway, preventing the defenders from fully closing the door.

This heroic act allowed time for his fellow soldiers to arrive and secure the door, leading to the eventual capture of the castle. Martim Moniz was killed in the incident. In his honor, the entrance was dubbed Porta de Martim Moniz (Gate of Martim Moniz).

There are currently several monuments and parks named after Martim Moniz in Lisbon. One of Lisbon's Lisbon's metro stations is named after him. This station features a stylized graphic of the event on its walls.

gosto muito da luz e da nitidez desta foto, o frescor do ar est� presente. gosto muito dos personagens, tudo bem enquadrado e bem mostrado, o castelo l� em cima diz tudo. belo trabalho. �, j� n緌 se fazem mais machos como antigamente.. ou quem sabe, essa maluquice toda de morrer pela causa tenha um certo paralelo na gana louca dos terroristas suicidas de hoje em dia

Muito boa, Paulo. Se n緌 fosse o t癃ulo demorava algum tempo a reconhecer o Martim Moniz. � claro que gosto de ver aqueles dois do lado esquerdo mas o melhor detalhe vai para a escultura a enquadrar o lado direito. A sugest緌 de ameias faz uma liga誽o imediata ao castelo, um detalhe criativo que gosto muito. Luz e cores muito apelativas. Talvez gost嫳se de ver mais um pouco de c徼, mas tamb幦 n緌 est� mal assim.

I like this view, where we can see not only this nice square, but also a considerable part of the Lisbon. This gives a general idea about the city's architecture and design. The picture was taken with very good composition, light, colors and quality. In particular, sharpness and detail contrast are perfectly good. Great job!

This place is not on regular tourist route, Paulo, however nice and pleasent to pass by. Also, according to the Sao-Jorge castle's pov and map submitted it's location is not far from Rossio sq.
Vivid colors compo. and contrast on brigt day.
