N緌 sou contra a ideia geral da Uni緌

Today, December 1st, is an holiday in Portugal: the Day of the Restoration of Independence (1640). [More details in Wikipedia.]. By ironic coincidence, the same day that celebrates the restoration of Portuguese independence, enters into force today in the European constitutional treaty (officially Treaty of Lisbon), which is an important step towards reducing the independence and sovereignty of member states of the European Union. I am not against the idea of the European Union, but there you are.
This picture shows the coat of arms of Portugal on the Chafariz d'El-Rei ("King's Fountain"), on the southern edge of Alfama district in Lisbon. This fountain is one of the oldest in Lisbon, possibly from the Muslim period (719-1147). It was restored in 1864.
See another, more modern, sculpture of the coat of arms of Portugal in the photo Banco Nacional Ultramarino.
