You may ask, where's the post Alfama (I)? It's Ricardo's Chatting is good for the soul. I even thought about title my post as Chatting is good for the soul (II), but I didn't because I don't know about Ricardo's plans. He posted the gas man. I post the policeman, in a similar chatting situation in Alfama, Lisbon. [I wasn't in Ricardo's team; my picture was a different day].
Alfama is the old core of Lisbon. But it is not just "Old Town Lisbon". It's a living community, a normal district. As a contrary example, Old Town San Diego, the birthplace of California, it is now the Old Town State Historic Park, a kind of museums compound, with some old houses (old by California standards). Even in Europe I recall Den Gamle By, the Århus Old Town (Denmark), that is an open air museum surrounded by nice gardens.
I think Alfama is not even like Óbidos; that Portuguese town is too pretty (every flower pot in the right place, every door nicely painted), becoming touristy kitsch.
Alfama is nothing like that; it's a real living comunity, like a village inside the city, with normal people whose ancestors have been living there for centuries.

Alfama é o núcleo antigo de Lisboa. Mas não é apenas a "Cidade Velha de Lisboa". É uma comunidade viva, um bairro normal. Como exemplo contrário temos a Old Town San Diego, berço da Califórnia, que é agora a Old Town State Historic Park, uma espécie de conjunto de museus, com algumas casas antigas (antigas para os padrões da Califórnia). Mesmo na Europa lembro-me de Den Gamle By, a Cidade Velha de Århus (Dinamarca), que é um museu a céu aberto, rodeado por belos jardins.
Acho que Alfama nem é como a demasiado bonita vila portuguesa de Óbidos (com cada flor no lugar certo, todas as portas bem pintadinhas, etc.), tornando-se kitsch turístico.
Alfama não é isso, é uma verdadeira comunidade viva, como uma aldeia dentro da cidade, com pessoas normais, cujos antepassados vivem lá há séculos, onde o polícia interrompe o seu serviço para conversar com os vizinhos.
