Nossa Senhora do Castelo (Our Lady of the Castle) is the patron saint of Coruche, in Ribatejo, Portugal. Every year in August there is a big feast and a procession in her honor.
Back in the 1960's and 70's, the devotion to Our Lady led many people to make vows ("pay promises", as the Portuguese say) regarding the fate of the young soldiers that were forced to fight in the Colonial War in Africa. Members of the extend family used to participate in the procession, as a way to accomplish the vows. Children were often in the procession, in many cases on behalf of their godfathers that went to war. As you see here, many children were not happy with the long walk and the heavy clothes under the fierce hot sun of August. Furthermore they knew very little about why they were there.
Inside the church there were also placed ex-votos (workshop of other photo).
This is but a little piece of the history the colonial war, on the home front, in a poor town of the poor country, under the dictatorship of Salazar's regime. The end of the colonial war was the best outcome of the 1974 Carnation Revolution (one of the few good accomplishments of it).
