Photographer's Note

The 羒idos Castle
is located in the village of the same name, Parish of Santa Maria, County of 羒idos, Leiria District, Portugal.

Portuguese example of the medieval fortress, built on a small hill, past the sea, dominates the surrounding plains and the Arno River in the east. Result of various architectural interventions over the centuries, includes the entire village, which preserves its characteristics in an almost medieval scenic.

Classified as a National Monument on July 7, 2007 he was elected as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.

The castle stands at an altitude of 79 meters above sea level, with plants in irregular rectangular shape (organic), mixing elements of Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and Manueline spread over two main zones: the Castelejo (Current Pousada Castle, or Pousada de 羒idos) in-house and the neighborhood.

The perimeter walls, strengthened by square towers, cylindrical, reaches 1,565 meters, fully covered by an embattled parapet defended by parapet. In some sections, the walls rise to 13 feet tall.

The section east of the wall constitutes the core of wider walled castle and the surrounding village, and that, extending from both sides toward the south by 500 meters, close to the perimeter edge, Torre called on the Torch.

Access is by four doors and two wickets, especially the Village Door or Gate of Our Lady of Mercy, surmounted by an inscription, placed there by King John IV (1640-1656), which reads: The Virgin Our Lady was conceived without original sin. Inside is a chapel with a balcony, tiled eighteenth century.

Hello Paulo,

the photo is really impressive. This castle is a very deserving and interesting subject. No doubt about that. But here now I want to discuss with you, who I consider a friend, about a problem which happened often to me too: the halo in the sky. It seems to me that this is an HDR, and often HDR produces halo. I found out some blogs which talk about this halo and how to eliminate it but I could not understand the technicalities.
I think it's a pity because the photo is a good one. IMO you should try to eliminate it.

By useing F11 aperture and a CP, with cloudy sky aloft - you had managed to achieve a dramatic effct on the castle.

Bonita composicion con un efecto un poco dramatico, con esas oscuras nubes, tambien he realizado fotos de esta magnifica construccion en mi reciente viaje, pero no se parecen en nada, yo tube un precioso dia de sol y Obidos me premi� con bellas fotos.
El gran angular te ha permitido captar todo el inmenso conjunto en un precioso trabajo.

This looks almost like an engraving, especially on the miniature. I really like the effect created by the massive but elegant old castle on the desaturated sky.
A good, close POV. There is a certain mystery about the place which I would certainly like to lift by visiting it!
