Photographer's Note
The fishing fleet leaving the harbour of Lagos, Algarve, Portugal, Summer 1968.
It's not that I have given up taking pictures, and so have to resort to posting archive efforts; but I rather like old images, as they seem to have a different resonance. And of course Gert Holmertz has given the lead, so this is for him and Ana Dores who must know this place.
I've "visited" Lagos again, virtually, on Google Maps, and driven the Little Yellow Man along this road. It seems that there is now a car park and promenade here, and the fishing fleet looks severely diminished. We camped only a couple of hundred yards up the road: I wonder if the site is still there, or whether it's place has been taken by a high-rise hotel. Toujours ça change, jamais c'est la même chose!
Nikon film scanner used to digitise the original transparency, but quality not A1.

Hello Will,
Now, I've been here a couple of times - once about ten years ago - and also just last summer. And, yes, you're right: there has been an enormous change from when you took this lovely photograph. In fact, I simply couldn't resist having a look through some of my pictures from last year and, although it's by no means a good photograph, I've added a little workshop picture for you which, perhaps, just gives you a flavour of what this place is like nowadays.
Your photograph is delightful and also of excellent quality despite the fact that it's been scanned from a 46 year old colour slide. Was this Kodachrome?
Your composition is perfect and we can clearly see the little fleet of boats debouching from the harbour into the calm deep blue sea with the typical rocks on the left and the vegetation on the right adding a fine foreground. But, oh dear, not a single ice cream stall, burger van or souvenir shop in sight - how did you cope in those days?
Lovely!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hi Will
A nice historic photo, one of the side benefits of this hobby is that we can compare how places change over time, the pictures I saw of Dubai twenty years ago compared to today are unbelievable. This is a great historic record, and the colors are beautiful
Cheers

Hello Will,
It is a valuable "historic" image. I didn't visit Lagos in the last 15 years or so, but it certainly looked much different. Although it is not the ultimate perfection technically wise (sharpness and colours), it would be an acceptable image if it was recent and it is an amazing image for its age; I wish my photos half that age were in so good shape!
TFS, regards, José.

Hi Will!
Fishing boats??? If you go there now you'll think you're in the wrong country, you won't recognize it at all. This photo is history. Very good pov, the place looked really peaceful and those boats look really beautiful.
