This is not an autumn-colored forest. And this is not a forest a couple of months after a fire. This is a plantation of eucalyptus that suffered a fire in summer and it's sprouting anew with the first rains of autumn.
Forest fires are a calamity every summer in Portugal. The Governments had even decreed an official fires season (roughly coincident with the beach season...). There are a dozen of strong reasons for the great forest fires in Portugal, especially in recent years; I've read in a book the 12 big causes why there are so many forest fires here.
One of those reasons it's the case of this photo: this is not a forest; this is not natural woodland; this is just a plantation of eucalyptus. The greed for fast profit lead many landowners to plant fast growing eucalyptus (which are used in production of paper). Many of the big fires are also in plantations of pine trees.
Portugal has a Mediterranean climate, with very dry, long, hot summers. The autochtone trees of this area (cork-oaks, holm-oaks, arbutus-trees, etc) were naturally more resistant to the summer heat and to the fires. That's not the case of the plantations of imported trees.
This photo was taken in the area of Quinta da Atalaia or Quinta da Princesa or Talaminho (I'm not sure of the placename there), one of the few "green" areas within the city limits of Amora.
