Photographer's Note

This gipsy girl I met on the streets of Blaj, Romania, at a speological art festival - she was just mocking around, interested in all that new people present there. I asked her if I could take her a picture. She was quite formal/sobre at the beginning, but after a while she did smile. Pretty nice the teeth missing - she was 5 or 6 probable.

This kids live with their parents and large families in improvised shelters, or abandoned houses. They are used as beggars by their parents or 'the boss' of the community. All the money they make goes to those 'heads' of the operation, who most of the times are quite rich.

Being a girl, and quite pretty, she will probable marry before 16 years of age. The gipsy communities, despite the common idea and the way they make money for living, are closed/exclusive, and have very strong and well-respected customs and social rules (for example, husband walks first, then one step behind the wife, then the kids. The wife is under the husband, who rules, but has her own oppinions and tasks that she's the only one who can carry out. She never argues her husband in public.)

Of course, I'm not an expert in the field, but I have an idea, as they are many around here.
