Photographer's Note

This small snake is a viper (vipera berus, probably) that was sleeping quietly between two stones of a granite wall, near Puigcerda, in Catalogna. It's one of the few venomous species of snakes we can find in Europe. I had just the time get close enough to take this shot before it quicky hided in its hole. I thought that the comparison between the texture of the snake skin and the granite stones was interesting. I think also that even if snakes frighten many people, this kind of shot shows that even venomous ones can be inoffensive if you're careful enough. Most of the accidents where venomous snakes are implicated in Europe (that is not true for other areas !) are due to the fact that the bitten person had put a hand or a foot on it by lack of care. One thing to know is that such kind of viper will never attack you, it will protect itself if you touch it or if you get too close too quickly. In all other cases, it will prefer to flee !
One last thing to know: Every kind of vipers are protected species in European Community !!!
