The white village, a photo from Menorca, Balearics

Photographer's Note

Fornells is a village located in a bay in the north of the Balearic island of Minorca, Spain. Fornells wants to be the ninth municipality of Menorca. Fornells is estimated to have a population of about 1000 people which increases in the summer due to tourism. Fornells' native people are known as Fornellers in the Catalan language and in Spanish.
The village was originally founded to serve the castle erected in the 16th century as a defence against the Barbary pirates for whom Fornells Bay provided the perfect safe haven. The castle was eventually demolished in the 18th century and all that is left of the military past of Fornells is the watch tower that you can see on the pic, on the headland, outside the village. From there to the west Cavaller燰 Cape can be seen, and to the east the massive bulk of Sa Mola, forming the eastern side of the entrance.
In 1798 the village was a landing site during the Capture of Minorca by the British.
Fornells Bay is deep, measuring 5 kilometres long and 2 kilometres wide. The narrow entrance regulates the force of the open sea. Sufficiently narrow to offer protection, the entrance allows water to enter the bay while restricting the waves. The wind is not so easily restrained. The surrounding hills are not high enough to keep out the Tramontane (Tramontana in Catalan), which has shaped the rocks and bent the trees over until the branches almost touch the ground.

IL VILLAGGIO BIANCO

Un porto naturale, splendido, che sorprende per la sua tranquillit� e autenticit�, in un'isola che in estate � ricca di turismo.
Questa tipico paese di pescatori � diventato uno dei punti di riferimento della costa Nord, grazie non solo alla bellezza del luogo, ma anche alla possibilit� di praticare diversi sport acquatici nella sicurezza e tranquillit� delle acque di questa splendida baia.La tranquillit� del luogo si rispecchia negli abitanti del paese, che dalle loro tipiche case in calce bianca vivono in totale rispetto per l'ambiente naturale che li circonda, uno spirito che ha saputo persistere nel tempo.
Questo luogo, lontano dai grandi complessi alberghieri che si trovano in altri punti dell'isola, mantiene infatti inalterato uno spirito vitale semplice ed autentico, che rimane anche nei mesi invernali, perch� vero e profondamente sentito da chi qui vive.Il bianco delle case di Fornells si fonde spesso con l'azzurro del cielo e con il blu delle acque cristalline della baia, che non a caso � sata denominata 𣫮iserva Marina�.
Lungo la costa della baia di Fornells si trovano quattro 𡤧ovas� ancora inesplorate, e tre piccoli isolotti, habitat naturale della 廍'argantana Balear�, una specie endemica di lucertola che vive solo qui.
Sia le 𡤧ovas� che gli isolotti sono raggiungibili solo via mare, e le miniere di sale che si trovano nei bassi fondali al termine della baia completano l'unicit� e la particolarit� di questo panorama idilliaco.
Il porto � protetto da un'imboccatura abbastanza stretta (circa 5km), e ci� rende possibile praticare nella baia diversi sport acquatici, dal windsurf, alla vela, al kayak e lo scuba-diving.

Une superbe lumi鋨e accentue le contraste entre la blancheur immacul嶪 des maisons et les couleurs vives des embarcations. La distance sur l'eau donne de la profondeur et la nettet� de l'image est au top.

its so cool that you basically have the colors of Spain in the boats, but yet everything else in the scene is blue and white.

It almost has a greek feel and look to it because of the architecture in the bg.

Even with a completely "white-washed" village, I'd say this is quite a colorful shot! What a great harbour scene, and your good fortune to have come across these boats which follow the countries flag in color...kind of poetic, don't ya' think? :) Crisp and clear, this would be inviting for anyone...I wonder just how much the population increases during the summer months, I know I'd like to be part of that statistic! excellent presentation of this section of Fornells with the red boats on the foreground to contrast perfect with the other colours of the photo and especially with the blue of the sea.The brilliant light of the middle of September brings out the details as the beauty of the houses on the opposite bank of the port.Well done.

com' e' brillante questa foto, il vigore della luce e dei colori rende il villaggio ancora piu' delizioso ed attraente. La tua composizione e' semplice ed elegante. This composition is fantastic, with a lovely view of the white population and its port, but these red and yellow boats in the foreground, are what give the impact on the composition and different from any other.

Nice repetition of the fg red and yellow boats tightly clustered in one group in the fg. Their warm colors contrast superbly against the blue water and sky. Good sharpness and excellent backdrop of the whitewashed houses along the shoreline in the distance. Tfs!

Dopo il periodo di barbarico savoiardo-risogimentale (per punizione ti mando in Sardegna) vedere le Baleari mi fa sempre pensare alla terra dove vivo , e dove adesso vecchio , da giovane ho militato contro l'industria petrolchimica.
Mi sembra di essere di fronte a casa, stessa squola o noleggio canoe e "moneta" che crea lavoro ...... il terziario supportato dalla filiera corta. Birra locale, come carni, vino e formaggi.
