The Palacio de Cristal (Crystal Palace) is a glass and metal structure located in Madrid's Buen Retiro Park. It was built in 1887 to exhibit flora and fauna from the Philippines, then a Spanish colonial possession. The architect was Ricardo Vel嫙quez Bosco.rnrnThe Palacio de Cristal, in the shape of a Greek cross, is made almost entirely of glass set in an iron framework on a brick base, which is decorated with ceramics. Its cupola makes the structure over 22 metres high. When it was erected, glass and iron construction on a large scale was already to be seen in Madrid at Delicias station (1880), the work of a French architect. However the curved architecture of the Palacio de Cristal is more comparable to the techniques pioneered by the British architects Joseph Paxton (who was responsible for London's Crystal Palace) and Decimus Burton (who was responsible for the Palm House at Kew Gardens).rnrnThe cast-iron frame was manufactured in Bilbao. The structure was designed in a way that would allow it to be re-erected on another site (as happened to the equivalent building in London). However, the building has remained on the original site, next to a lake, and has been restored to its original appearance. It is no longer used as a greenhouse, and is currently used for art exhibits.

Fantastic place to exhibit flora nad fauna from exotic parts of Spanish empire! And great to see that the building is still in good condition although not in original use. Close and wide angle gives good attention to details. I also like those branches on top of the frame.

Fantastic photo of this Chrystal Palace. It looks so beautiful against this very blue sky and in the fine, warm winter light. Its structure is seen very clearly thanks to the perfect sharpness. The overhanging branches are well included in the upper half of the photo.

I do know this Crystal Palace from pictures from Luis and I visited it also about a year ago.
This is a very beautiful presentation: a view with excellent transparency, very clear, perfect sharp and taken from a good angle.
Nice with the overhanging winter branches.

very cool. right away the subject takes up the entire side to side frame. and I like how we can see through the glass onto the opposite side, we don't see that too often.

the leaves up top falling downward add a nice touch too.
cool blue tones work as well
