Photographer's Note
This large structure in the FG might look like a redeveloped rollercoaster track. But it is 'el Mirador', the fabulous walkway on top of ‘Metropol Parasol’, aka 'Setas (mushrooms) de Sevilla’ . It was designed by Berlin architect Jürgen Mayer. He was inspired by the aults of the Cathedral of Seville and the ficus trees of the Plaza de Cristo de Burgos.
His design proposal was chosen after a competition. The jury saw his proposal as a reconciliation of the work of Antoni Gaudí and Santago Calatrava, which is a little curious. The architects are not so far apart as one might think, considering the distinctly Gaudian pillars of Calatrava’s Estacão do Oriente in Lisboa.
The building process started it 2006 and ended in 2011. The cost was 100 million Euro.
The main function of the ‘Setas’ was to refresh and modernize the urban image of Sevilla. It's on the location of a demolished market and to make up for this, in its bowels is a new food market. It's the largest wooden (laminated birch from Finland), structure in the world. This could have been a fire hazard, were it not that the wood is covered by a fire retardant layer.
At the planning stage there was opposition - the Semana Sancta organizers were against it and, strange enough, a Spanish-German trade organization too. Perhaps it was considered to be too much of a "fremdkörper" in the middle of town. But in the 6 years of its existence is has become an organic element of the town. And the view it offers on the town and its surroundings is wonderful.
Checkout the WS
for a view of the Setas on treet level and one to show you how it looks in colour.

Hello Bert,
Wow, you have captured this modern building so completely: showings its position, its close-up details and adding your own special artistry.
I'm not surprised that people were concerned about it, before its construction because it is very very modern, unlike any other building, and it takes a special strength to stand out so radically.
In the end, the architect has proven to be a trend setter. This building is a delight to see and to photograph and must have seriously attracted attention to the city.
I love all your photographs.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Bert,
This is a fantastic structure, and regardless how this may have looked before, it has to be a great improvement of the area. It really looks like an amusement park and the checkered pattern creates a amazing contrast to the ordinary city view. Seeing the WS it looks just as good from below. The colours don't contribute much, but this photo and one WS have very nice and well processed B&W tones.
Best regards,
Gert

Dag Bert,
U toont ons een heel mooi panorama beeld over El Mirador.
Inclusief de stad gezien van uit de hoogte.
Goed foto werk, en behoorlijk scherp en klare weergave.
Goed gedaan Bert.

Hello Bert,
For me, this structure looks like a giant wafer. Amazing view. I remember this Mirador but I am not sure if I walked down this walkway. Fantastic composition on black and white.
Kind regards MAlgo

Hello Bert,
This is great! I've never seen this structure before, and I love all the curves and shapes. The walkway is also very eye-catching, and there are some nice shadows, too. with this wide POV we can appreciate the blending of old and new. The WS photos are also very nice.

Hi Bert
Very graphic image, the patterns in the foreground make it look three dimensional. With the view of the city in the background and the people walking on El Mirador it looks quite surreal.
It wasn't there when I visited Seville so it's fascinating to see it in our photo.
Best wishes
Kasia

Hallo Bert,

Hi Bert
An amazing scene well photographed. Would have loved to have seen it but my visit to Sevilla was in 2009 so before it was finished.

This was built long after our visit in Sevilla on 06/1998, Bert, that's why I was asstonshied to see this picture, as I did not recognize the place.
Rightly chosen B&W due to strong light upon the structure. However would like to see this on sunrise or sunset colors ( next time around...).
Have a nice new week,
Ike

Hello Bert!
First class chice of B&W with excellent sharpness and a favourable light, would have been less when presented in colour.
BTW: The good old German Fremdkörper as a loanword in English - that's new to me!
Best regards

Hello Bert, three excellent shots of 'El Mirador'.
We have been to Seville since this was built, but obviously totally missed out on seeing this amazing structure.
The black and white is perfect for this particular viewpoint, as we can appreciate the design of all those interlocking pieces and the walkway.
Thanks for the w/s shots they help us to understand the whole building.
Kind regards, Jean.
