16 The Monument to Alfonso XII, was approved by the Courts according to the Law of July 23, 1887, to erect an equestrian statue in Madrid that would honor the memory of the late King Alfonso XII, personifying the Homeland, which was endorsed by his widow the regent queen Mrs. Mar燰 Cristina de Habsburgo-Lorena. However, the project fell into oblivion until the ex-minister D. Francisco Romero Robledo decided to reinvigorate its execution, so that its inauguration coincided with the coming of age of Alfonso XIII, scheduled for 1902.

The sculptor Mariano Benlliure was directly appointed to carry it out, he had to resign under pressure from various organizations, such as the Central Society of Architects or the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, who asked for a free and public competition, since he was going to be paid for by national subscription. Thus, on April 16, 1901, the call was published in La Gaceta de Madrid.

The winner of the contest was the idea presented by the architect Jos Grases Riera, who, taking as a model the Berlin monument of Emperor William I, proposed to place it in the place of the old pier, so as not to cut down a tree, which was one of his main hits.

The result, is more an interesting architectural ensemble than a sculptural one, it is an authentic open-air museum, in which up to twenty-four artists of the first order would take part, even though it was thought that they had reached thirty-eight. The first stone of the Monument to Alfonso XII was placed on May 18, 1902 by his son, King Alfonso XIII, the day after his coronation and as the first official act, who would also be in charge of solemnly inaugurating it on June 3, 1922, after more than twenty years of works, even though since January 23, 1909 the equestrian statue of the king, finally made by Mariano Benlliure, had already been placed.

The monarch was accompanied in this event by the entire Royal Family, but without the presence of those who had been two of his greatest promoters, Romero Robledo and the architect Grases Riera, now deceased, the last in 1919, so he had to be replaced in the direction of the works by Teodoro Anasagasti. Originally the monument had much greater decoration than the current one, very close to the neo-baroque, with sculptures and vases that would disappear and would not be restored after the Civil War.

In 1979, due to its deteriorated condition, a restoration and consolidation project was approved, the execution of which would begin three years later and would not be completed until 1988, including the paving of the fish market, which the economic difficulties during the construction process had prevented. In 2000, given the deterioration of some of the statues, such as the lions at the entrances and the staircase, it was decided to replace them with identical bronze ones, recovering the original idea of making them in this material.
