Photographer's Note

View on the village of Murren from Schilthorn, Piz Gloria, one of the famous places in swiss Alps to visit. This place is well known for it connection to the James Bond's 1967 movie "On Her Majesty Secret service".
The Schilthorn is a 2,970 metre high summit of the Bernese Alps in Switzerland. It overlooks the valley of Lauterbrunnen in the Bernese Oberland, and is the highest mountain in the range lying north of the Sefinenfurgge Pass. The Schilthorn lies above the village of M僡ren, from where a cable car leads to its summit.

Administratively, the summit is within the municipality of Lauterbrunnen, although the western slopes are within the municipality of Reichenbach im Kandertal. Both municipalities are in the canton of Bern.

The summit has a panoramic view which spans from the Titlis, Jungfrau, M霵ch, Eiger, over the Bernese Alps and the Jura mountains up to the Vosges Mountains and the Black Forest. Mont Blanc is also just visible.

To get to the Schilthorn from the valley floor either of a series of cable cars must be taken. The cable cars begin in Stechelberg leaving to Gimmelwald and then onto M僡ren. From M僡ren another cable car is taken to Birg, which is the final change before the Schilthorn. This cable airway is the longest and was the most technically challenging airway to be built. The other way up is to take the cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Gr慤schalp and a train to M僡ren, from where the cable car must be taken. Between Birg and the summit, the cable car passes over Grauseeli, a small lake. It is also possible to hike to the peak, along the myriad of small, but well-marked paths to the top. The hike to the top takes roughly 5 hours from Gimmelwald for a fit walker.

There is a panoramic revolving restaurant, named Piz Gloria, at the summit, which is where the 1969 James Bond movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service was set. A black ski run featured in the film starts at the summit and leads down to the Engetal below Birg. The restaurant revolves a full 360 degrees in 55 minutes.

Hello Mike,

I haven't seen the Bond movies so I can't recognize the place. Big wow what a gorgeous view it is. Awesome composition and sharpness, lovely natural colours. I would love to see it and to hike a bit. To go by this Birg cable car and the to hove a lunch in the revolving restaurant must be terrific experience.

This is a breathtakingly beautiful view of the small village at the foot of the mountain. The large version of the photo allows me a good look at the small farms and huts scattered along the narrow roads across the valley. It's an interesting and very attractive photo of a high technical quality.

Il fallait monter tr鋊 haut pour avoir une image semblable o� les maisons dans la vall嶪 paraissent si petites. Un endroit id嶧l pour un saut en parapente.

Wow, what an impressive view and I really like that you left out all the sky. It's a great combination of the gently sloping fields, the small houses and the much rougher rocks.
