Photographer's Note
Sunset from the 2683m summit of the Faulhorn.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The oldest and highest mountain hotel in the Alps, opened in 1832, has reached a crossroads in its history. On the one hand, many years without meaningful investment have seen comfort take a back seat. On the other, exactly that is the reason why a large and assorted "fan club" of hikers regularly make the hotel the focus of their trips. Wood smoke in the kitchen, solar energy that often doesn't last through the evening, freezing cold water from snow melt, that runs out by morning: exactly these luxuries are what for many people make a stay on the Faulhorn more like a bush experience than a hotel break.
It can only be hoped that the guesthouse on the Faulhorn manages to find a sensible path between conservation and restoration, so that future generations can continue to enjoy this unique place in the Alps.
Fantastic report on the hotel here! . Even if you can't read German, check out the illustrations and whet your appetite for a stay on the Faulhorn.
This is a great shot Phil, and considering you had the sun in the frame you've controlled the light very well; there's good detail in the foreground and the sky is not too over-exposed.
The inclusion of the girl enjoying the sunset was a good move.
Good work.
Hi Phillip,
Fantastic orange sunset showing rays pushing through the cloud on viewers level. Also the foreground is well planned with the funny stone tower and woman watching sunset. Moment makes it worth staying up there.
Hello Phillip:))
This is really beautiful photo,
very nostalgic,
with some special mood,
great pastel colors
and well taken.
Maybe I would try to "move" the stones a little bit left but I'm still not sure...I must think.
Hi Phil!
It's an unusual mountain sight to me, because one would expect you'd be fuming about the bleak weather in the said hotel (thanks for the note :)
It was really worthy. The cairn is also a hallmark of the attention the hikers bring with their own stone; it's so fragile, just like an isolated spot like that shelter.
Great smooth waning light, and you took the subtlest of it for exposure of the foreground. Thanks for the forethought, so...
Cheers, F'
Hi Phil,
I haven't been around here in a while. This is great. Somehow it feels more Asian the European to me (for no logical reason). It is a shot I think that appeals to sense of nostalgia of anyone that has done any trekking, or climbingm or hillwalking. It answers that question of why people engage in those activities...it is to get to spots like this.
Nicely done technically but the emotional ring of it is what i really like.
Cheers
Hi Phillip.
It looks like a dream. I like the contrast in colors of the pile of stone against the beautiful sunset. It is a very nice composition.
Amazingly beautiful shot and proper composition! i was so much concentrated on the stones balncing at the top. I must have spent minutes looking at it! Must be glued in as the wind will topple it over easily.
Hi Philip, I like the idea of this photo but it doesn't entirely work for me. I wish the girl was a lot more prominent in the picture and not overlapped with the mountains in the back. Maybe a bit less sky and the rocks being less centered would help too. But I do like the warm sunset colours you've captured and the mood you're trying to convey here.
Hi Phil, wonderfull perspective. i like how you have managed to offcentre the pile of rocks to the right within short distance from the woman. Good depth of colour which allows for a wonderfull warm sunset. Well done.
Great and strong mood here. The scale is a little disturbing and before seeing the woman, I thought the rocks were big. That's well composed and cropped. Good light management too.
hello Philip.
A nice moody picture of the sunset (I may see an artefact at about 8 o'clock of is it PP?).
just for info, the Faulhorn hotel is not the highest in the Alps, the Gornergrat Kulm above Zermatt is located at 3100 meters with also a fine view :o)
best regards
