Photographer's Note

In the grounds of Chatsworth House as part of a Sotheby's selling exhibition many sculprues by artists such as Damien Hirst, Salvador Dali and Anish Kapoor. This sculpture positioned in the Gardens cascade was created by Robert Indiana and is called 'LOVE- red outside, blue inside'. The image created in 1964 has had numerous incarnations since its original Christmas card release.
Infamously, Indiana failed to register a copyright for the work, and found it difficult to deter unauthorized commercial use. The image has been reproduced in countless times in varying forms, including sculptures, posters, and 3-D desk ornaments. It has been translated into Hebrew, Chinese, and Spanish. It strongly influenced the original cover of Love Story, the Erich Segal novel. It was parodied on the Rage Against the Machine album cover for Renegades, as well as the cover for Oasis' single Little by Little from the 2002 album Heathen Chemistry. Artist Mathew Jones created an AIDS-protest homage that read "DEAD". Philadelphia anti-folk singer Adam Brodsky has a tattoo reading "DORK".

*Chatsworth is the seat of the Dukes of Devonshire, whose family name is Cavendish, from Cavendish, Suffolk. William Cavendish was Bess of Hardwick's second husband, the only one by whom she had issue.
Chatsworth stands on the left bank of the River Derwent and looks across the river to the low hills that divide the valleys of the Derwent and the Wye. The Park is expansive, and behind the house, hills fall backwards. Up and above and beyond are rocks and bracken and heather.
The house contains a unique collection of priceless paintings, furniture, European Old Master drawings, neoclassical sculpture and other artefacts. Chatsworth's garden is one of the most famous in England. Chatsworth has been selected as the United Kingdom's favourite country house several times.
