Photographer's Note

This is the first picture Ive posted of Dorset the place where I live. To the left of the picture is the Isle of Portland, linked to the seaside town of Weymouth by a long road-bridge, and joined naturally to the mainland by the famous Chesil Beach (not visible here).

Aside from its beach, Weymouth has three main claims to fame: the Black Death entered England here in 1348; it was a favourite holiday destination of King George III (ruled 1760-1820), of whom there is a large statue in the town centre; and it will host the sailing events for the 2012 Olympics (by which time Ill have moved to London anyway).

Portland is mainly famous as a quarry, its limestone having been integral to the construction of buildings as famous as St. Pauls Cathedral and Buckingham Palace.

This photo is taken from the eastern end of Weymouth Beach. If you look carefully you can just make out an unattended fishing rod in the centre.

(The picture has been saturated slightly to improve the colour).
