Photographer's Note
Good morning Everyone,
My photograph shows the lime kilns which are situated next to Beadnell Harbour.
There are 3 lime kilns, the earliest of which was built in 1789.
By lighting fires in these kilns and adding crushed limestone, lime was produced. The lime was used as a fertiliser, to make acidic land more productive and in making mortar for buildings.
The lime kilns were very well placed for transporting the lime by ship, much of it going to Scotland.
By 1822 they had fallen out of use as kilns, but they were used by local fishermen for curing herrings.
The kilns have now been given listed status, for heir protection and belong to the National Trust
In the background, you will see the turreted property which is called Beach Court. We stayed there for a few days!
I will add a second photograph to show their situation with regard to the harbour.
Thank you for your interest, Bev :-)

Hello Bev,
I would have thought these kilns were ruins of a medieval castle. I wonder if you can actually go inside them or just admire the fine stonework from outside. The photo is as usual well balanced, and you found a lady in pink to further brighten the view. It's also a very sharp photo and there is a nice view of your B&B place in the background. (It gets good reviews at Tripadvisor.)
The WS looks a bit less sharp than most of your photos.
Kind regards,
Gert

Beadnell is a lovely part of Northumberland. We spent a week there many years ago and had the whole lovely beach to ourselves. You have captured a very well balanced view and have given very interesting information in your description.

Hi Bev,
The presenc eof the persons is animating the scene. The point of view is showing the details of the lime kilns and of the house in the background. The quality of the light beautifies the colours. Have a nice day.

Hello Beverley, I agree with Gert that the kilns do look more like a medieval castle than what they actually are.
A good idea to also include the workshop picture so we can see the position of the kilns in relation to the harbour.
The blue sky was the perfect complement to the buildings.
Kind regards, Jean.

Good evening Beverley,
I remember this small fort and the house behind which you showed in the near past. Yet another perspective of the place, a fine take with good light prevailed.
My best regards,
Ike

Hello Beverley,
The bright sunlight was excellent for the walls of these kilns and the excellent note explains clearly what they were used for. Superb sharpness, fine play of light and shadow and a beautiful blue sky make the picture really attractive.

Dear Beverley,
Excellent postcard and the note provides some useful information. This time however, I prefer the WS over the main upload. With the sole man wearing a blue jacket in this rigid environment creates a fine photograph.
Best Wishes,
Gy.

Hi Bev
There is one big problem with lime mortar - it slowly crumbles away, as in the case of old chimneys in my house! Can't say I've ever seen a lime kiln so a very interesting photo and beautiful in the large view.
cheers

Bonjour, chère Bev,
Voilà un historique peu commun à travers ces fours à chaux !
Comme quoi, rien ne se perd, tout se transforme.
Une composition animée joliment avec les personnages faisant une halte méritée ?
Amitiés.

Hi Beverley
The lighting is fab! A very nicely composed summery shot of the old kiln showing character of the place. Interesting detail all round, enhanced by pretty deep blue sky. Excellent shot

Hi Bev,very interesting post, showing the buildings very important for the economic life of this village in the last centuries. Lime first and herrings too after many years in a long history. 2 perfect pics,a classic view and a wonderful perspective in the WS. Have a nice Sunday and thanks,Luciano

Hi Bev
Lovely photo! The stone walls look wonderful in this light and on the background of clear blue sky. The pink top of the lady on the bench adds a special pint of focus.
I really like that building where you stayed too!
Best wishes

Hello Beverley,
I remember this place from previous pictures of yours.
Interesting to know that lime was produced here. My first idea would be that this structure had a defensive function (against attacks from the sea).
This area is apparently ideal for catching lobsters.
Excellent clear and sharp pictures.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Bev,
Interesting post with these kiln in the foreground and the Beach Court in the background. From your text I notice that both are worth visiting and especially if the sky is as beautiful blue as in your beautiful photo.
I googled for the Dutch lime kilns, but there aren't many of them left and they look a bit different.
Excellent presentation
Have a nice day, groet Rob

Hi Bev,
this looks like a great base to explore Northumberland indeed. I remember a friend of mine from work, also foreigner, he told me when he visited Northumberland for the first time he was so excited, so impressed that he decided to spend his whole holidays with 2 kids in there next year. He booked accommodation etc. When he arrived for a week of holidays it was pouring for the whole week, and he said there was absolutely nothing to do there with kids at bad weather.
I am in the lucky situation that I can just drive there for a one day trip when the weather is promising...
Anyway, lovely place, I haven't been to this town yet, I will remember it for the future,
Great reportage,
M
