Photographer's Note
Its got to be done sometime, but why when I am visiting !!
Having looked forward for some years to visiting Roslyn Chapel, I was disappointed by this view when I arrived.
And you, dear viewer must suffer with me, as while I was able to lick my wounds with a tour round the interior, alas no interior photos are allowed.
Much has been written about this chapel, and its significance, not least in the novel The Da Vinci Code, so I wont repeat it here.
What I found most intriguing is that for all its ornate stonework, it is in fact an unfinished project. The original plan was to build a much bigger church, this current west wall being in fact the east wall of the unbuilt transept, with a much larger nave being built to the right of this view.
For those who may be interested this may help you.

Hi Martin,
Oh dear! I don't think I've ever visited this place when it has not had some sort of scaffolding on it - but never as much as this!
I presume that you went inside and had a look around? The inside is totally stunning and I did once visit it when photography inside was allowed and managed to get a very, very fuzzy picture of the Apprentice's Pillar with a very early compact camera. I remember the days when a group could get in for about £1 but, since Dan Brown wrote his book, the prices have soared and photography is now forbidden inside. The excuse which the owners have is that someone trying to take a picture stepped backwards and fell down some steps - and that's why they banned photography. However, I rather suspect they much prefer to sell photographs in the adjoining shop.
Anyway, Martin, this is a fine photograph but of a rather depressing scene. I have just managed to find the picture I mentioned - on an old CD here - and have uploaded it as workshop picture for you. Sorry about the poor quality but it's no doubt the last picture I will ever be able to take of this interesting subject, now that photography has been banned in here.
An interesting note too!
What a Shame!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hi Martin,
it is a very funny photo, title and note. It happens to me all the time while visiting new places that something is under construction so I am not going even to make a list of it. I see it does not only happen to me.
Not only you had the bad luck with the construction but also the weather was quite bad with the worst sky a photographer would like to have, I am glad that you still managed to make something from this trip. I have read the book so I would be interested in seeing this place as well. It must have been really interesting.
By the way I have passed Kirkby Stephen last Saturday and I thought about you over there but the decision to drive was done in a last minute so it was too late to contact you. You have certainly had some plans already anyway. As soon as I manage to have a look at my photos I may soon label Cumbria on my TE map of UK :)
