Photographer's Note
I expect the character in the middle of the picture is fantasizing about the ‘one that got away’, as a fish which grows to the size he is discussing is haddock.
And why might he be talking about haddock ?
Hear the word Arbroath, and the word that might next come to mind is smokie, for Arbroath is well known for its hot smoked haddock, otherwise known as an Arbroath Smokie .
A kipper by contrast is a salted and cold smoke cured herring, which requires cooking before consumption.
Or maybe, and more likely, he is gesticulating to partners about the distance between the woods on the grass in front of him, as they engage in a game of bowls
In the rear of the image is Arbroath Abbey, which, founded in 1178, then foundered during the Reformation in the mid 16th century. Today it serves as a popular tourist attraction.
For those with an eye on the future state of the union, the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath may be of interest….

Hi Martin,
An interesting scene, and a fantastic backdrop, that abbey is beautiful! I like your choice of title, it does indeed look like a tall tale in progress. Great depth in the shot, and very rich light colours brought by that really well maintained grass
All the best

Hello Martin, lovely image here. I guess for those people there, it's more than a game, it's a social meeting. Amazing green there. Good take.
Regards!
