Photographer's Note
October 21st is the memorial day to Vice-Admiral Nelson, who died in 1805.
That was the reason for the flags array as a mast with flags on a ship.
Here is a Wikipedia page about the monument, which is a 32m tall, 150m above sea-level. This is one of several monuments built on Calton-Hill, a high point over Edinburgh.
Location on map: 55.9544, -3.1826
Tchnical's: A JPEG picture, F5.6, exp. 1/800, ISO400.
One WS with a wider view from street level.

*** As Stephen mentioned, October 21st is also known as "Trafalgar Day", to commemorate the battle on that specific date.

Hello Ike,
A fine homage to Britain's best loved admiral. The ship's pennants sit well against the pastel blue sky and make a lovely frame for the tower. The official name for the day is Trafalgar Day celebrating Nelson's great victory over the combined French and Spanish fleets off the coast of Spain and, of course the day on which he died.

Hello Ike,
I didn't know about the existence of this tower until I saw it in your gallery. It is a clever way, with a horizontal pole and angled flags. Incidentally, Lord Nelson's flagship the HMS Victory is in drydock in Portsmouth. During the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, he was mortally wounded. To get his remains back to England, they "pickled" him in a barrel of brandy.
Warm regards,
Bulent

Hello Ike,
We get a very good view of the details of the black tower in this photo, but the WS is also nice. That view is perfectly divided along a diagonal with lovely colours of the trees in the lower part. The flags and the colours they provide play a more important role for the official photo.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi Ike.
One of the representative monuments of Edinburgh, which has its charm with that form of lighthouse, it hurts that the stone is so black, is crying out for a clean. The flags give a nice chromatic.
Magnificent management of brightness and sharpness, to enjoy with the details.
Well seen and fulfilled. I like it.
You have a good day.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Ciao Ike
l'importanza di questo ufficiale della marina si denota proprio dal fatto che dopo tanti anni, ancora oggi si innalza il gran pavese in suo ricordo.
Ottima condivisione, molto interessante.

Hello Ike,
It is a very pretty tower, it reminds me of a rook (in chess). The flags around it add nice specks of warm colors.

Hello Ike,
It's a treat when you learn something about your own country from visitors!
Anyway, I suspected that it must be a memorial day for Nelson when I saw the bunting. None of that was in evidence when we were there!
In fact, the bunting gives the memorial the appearance of the mast of a tall ship!
It is a fine memorial and Calton Hill itself, is a great place to visit.
I like how you have just concentrated on the tall tower, with no other distractions.
Have a great day,
Bev :-)

Hello Ike I'm very grateful to you for showing the Nelson Monument that I see for the first time; we have the counterpart of this art work in Montreal, Place Jacques Cartier, that doesn't look alike at all but honors the Admiral Nelson also. Thanks for showing this monumental landmark by the rules book and ... with a yellow parrot perched in the highest tree! Shalom

Hello Ike,
both of your pictures are well composed and interesting, I like the context and the diagonal in the wider view and the main post is very interesting for the details and textures of the tower as well as the colourful flags flying all around it. I like how you brought out the colours against the cloudy sky. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great weekend,
Ourania

Hello Ike
I know there are a lot of monument in honour of Nelson in the world. Mostly with the guy himself on the top of it. But I think this is also an interesting idea for a monument and it gives a perfect possibility for dressing the monument for special occasions.
Beautiful work
Have a nice day

Hello Ike,
I like the contrast between the array of colourful flags draping the lighthouse type of memorial and the dark sombre stonework of the structure. Tfs!

Ike, the old tower was decorated with flags on the occasion of a memorial day. This monument can be seen from far distance as it is located on a hill. Fine colors, good sharpness, interesting photo note, regards.
