Photographer's Note
Great Tew is a tiny village north of Oxford. On a cold misty winter day I came across the largely derelict Tudor house and captured it on Kodachrome-25 film, which I just recently scanned into digital format. A year later when I visited the village, I saw that the house had deteriorated further, with the roof having collapsed in places. Several years later when I visited again, I found the house restored -- but no longer presenting the hauntingly beautiful view you see in this photo. (I was a member of the Department of Theoretical Physics at Oxford University at the time.)

I love the desaturating effect of the mist. It compliments the scene perfectly.

Hello,
yes, "hauntingly beautiful" is the right thing to say both about this place and about your photo...
Well done, thanks for sharing!

Hello Bulent
Nice well composed shot is this.
Although I like the sphere of the picture, I'll try a workshop to give this old house more impact.

Hi Bulent,
a real great shot. My first impression on the preview was kind of a witch house. And it hasn't lost its magic. The forest around it together with the fog gaves it a complete unrealness.

Hell Bulent,
Indeed this place has something special.
Like if a ghost was living there.
This is due to the fog and the way you captured the light.
The POV is also excellent.
I posted a B&W version of the picture.
I believe it adds a little bit more to the "old house" effect.

Hi Bulent,
What a tragedy for this once apparently lovely building, but what a joy for you. A whimsical image and simply and beautifully photographed.

Hello Professor,
Thanks a lot for sharing this 33 year old photo with us. You captured this as I was learning to walk:)) This seems right out of some classic movie scene. Excellent POV. One can almost feel how cold and misty it must have been.

Hello Bulent!
Wow, this looks like an old house in a fairy tale. Or it could also be a scene in an old hollywood horror movie from the 30s. (I´d love to visit Oxford. Unfortunately it´s too late for me now to study there...)
Warm regards,
Nina

This is a wonderful image. The sense of atmosphere is inspiring. I now have a desire to pull out "Return of the Native" or "The Woodlanders" or possibly another Thomas Hardy novel. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Bulent.
Terrific shot. With the fog and soft tones it looks more like a painting than a photo. Well done.

Very nicely done. One of the few nice low contrast photos on this site. It seems the sharpness of the digital cameras is making it harder to capture shots like this.
Looks like a hard job to restore!

To find a precious stone and enjoy it for yourself, is one thing.
To share your amusement Bulent, with all those who want to share it with you - it's quite another one..
And now, I found it.
Thanks to some Turkish guy, living in America.
If atomic physics allow - him and his Japanese friends, with the help of a romantic Kodachrome - will travel to England to find me a Tudor old house of my dreams, straight from the pages of my first literature..
You know, the one with knights, and bad-guy wizards, and the dark manors in the deep forests, and a princess as innocent as only princesses innocent are.
And I'm a kid again, with the blush-red cheeks burning with emotion, reading a story, very close to the light of a window in the attic, and a friendly spider crawls slowly upon the pages of my book.
And don't even try to wake me up.

HEllo again,
excuse me, I jus found you and this picture was on your intro page and I liked it very much! Yes, I like that hauntedfeeling that comes with it and I think Polonaise did a wonderful job with his workshop of putting emphasis on it. When I see your two pictures I just critiqued, I see that they both have an uncommon color tone, kind of cold. Is it some post-processing? Is it the film? Is it the scanning?
It truly is a beautiful finding!!
HAve a nice day,
Marc

What a superb image Bulent! I have many pictures of thatched cottages, pristinely kept and freshly thatched, but I'd swap any ten for this one. The misty day murky weather serves to enhance the atmosphere of deriliction.

What a very haunting photo! Good POV, you can almost feel the old ghosts staring back at you. I agree with others, you were lucky to have the fog as it makes the photo! Well done!

Hello Bulent,
this is a wonderful image. For some reason it makes me feel quite emotional, yet I can't figure ot why. It has the feel of "Lark Rise to Candleford" which you must read if you haven't already.Or perhaps "Cider with Rosie". It makes me feel English, which I am although from the north of England...my origins in those dark satanic mills. Perhaps in another life!....
best wishes

I suppose it is difficult to keep a place in just the right state of dis-repair to be romantic. It would be interesting to see the restored property. The weather conditions at the time are perfect for this subject, creating a wonderful atmosphere. I see it has attracted a lot of WSs but I have to say your original is the best.

Beautiful scene. Very "English" with the mist, which on the other hand does not blur the texture of the stone walls and the thatch roof.
Congratulations Bulent!

Hello Bulent,
Browsing through your remarkable gallery, I came across this captivating image. The old English tudor, mysterious in its desolation and foggy atmosphere, offers an imaginative mood of the history of the house and its occupants through the years. Lovely picture!

Hi Bulent,
Firstly thank you for visiting my site and let me say your wonderful comments mean a great deal to me ......to the business at hand.
You are right I do like this shot very much and looking at the date you took it I myself had moved to a place in Oxford called Carterton (RAF Brize Norton)...this was whilst serving in the British Forces.
I think you captured the atmosphere perfect with the mystical fog lingering and to show what it was like ...I will find time and go and look for this place and see if the beauty is restored and maintained.

Hi Bulent.
Maybe the light was not the best one, but the note and the place are also a good exemple of what we see.
Anyway, the composition and the atmosphere look really interesting.

Hello Bülent,
but this house is quite far from my chestnut cellar! Of course, not the geographical distance is interesting here but the appearance and the mood. This picture is almost on the border of photography (no wonder after having had a look at your own homepage), it is like a painted illustration of a 19th century English novel. (Far from the madding crowd?) Even the light fog is as if arranged by the artist.
Not a really nice theme but excellent photo, absolutely.
Congratulations!

Bonsoir, cher ami Bulent,
Ma passion pour l'architecture est ici comblée. Magnifique chaumière anglaise, et, malgré son triste état force est de reconnaître qu'il émane une beauté toute particulière de l'ensemble.
Superbe !
