Photographer's Note
My 200th Post - a double century.
So as a celebration a place many centuries older.
Soutra Aisle is on the site of a renowned medieval hospital, known throughout Europe at that time. It was founded around 1160 by the Augustian monks at the request of King Malcolm IV.
The monks treated the sick, gave alms to the poor and sanctuary to fugitives. A 'blood pit' was found, containing the solidified blood of patients who had been 'bleed' as part of their treatment, apparently anthrax was found in it as well.
It has been excavated since 1986 and traces of cloves from Africa have been found as well as numerous herbs and seeds used in medicine. There are tales of a local shepherd being stoned till he ran off as his sheep where eating the precious local herbs. There are also a series of springs nearby, which were essential for the healing processes.
The aisle was used as a burial vault by a local family and is all that is left of the once extensive hospital.
The site is dramatic on the edge of the moorfoot hills with views of Edinburgh to the North. Nowdays a more modern power - the wind turbines - appear behind (on the righ).
There is a lot of information about Soutra & it's finds on the internet.
