Old shot, a photo from London, England

Photographer's Note

The suburban/village architecture of single houses in United Kingdom has always fascinated me with its picturesque style, each house having its own individual look, yet in harmony with the others around.

This was shot in either 1961 or 1962. I was on London as a trainee for one summer as a young student. I had borrowed my dad's Kodak Retina Reflex and used Kodachrome II dia film.

I cannot remember any more where this view is from. I think it is somewhere in the suburbs of London, but I'm not sure of it. Maybe some local TE member recognizes the place?

I was surprised myself that the photo still came up with somewhat decent colours, although I of course had to do some post processing after scanning. Most important changes were removing dust and correcting a slight viola colour cast. I added a little saturation too (+10).

Ah! The suburbs of London... I was there, for holidays in 1969, few years after you. I stayed in a family in Highgate, upper north (one of the last station in the northern line), and the surrounding was like in this photo. But I guess it can be anywhere in greater London...
You are right it came out incredibly well for a scan. I regret my kodachromes, they were so smart! Good contrast and wonderful colours like in this photo.

Hi Lasse,
I am impressed by the quality. 46 years old but it seems like yesterday. The nostalgic feeling we have here is wonderful, enhanced by the houses, their paintwork and of course the old car parked on the left.
These are images we don't see often here and in this high quality not at all. You did a very good work here in scanning on the very good conserved Kodachrome...perfect..!!!

Great shot! It's amazing that, but for the shape of the cars (and the fact that there are so few of them!) this could have been shot yesterday. The 'burbs were just as depressing back then as today! Great shot, even better scan. TFS! Phil

I am very impressed with the quality of this old image. I wish I could scan so well some of my better shots 30 years newer than this one. The image itself is very nice also, typically English. The POV was chosen cleverly and the colours, still pretty vivid help make it quite eye catching.

Hi Lasse.

I was born in 1961 and the fascinating thing, to me at least, is that apart from the cars, this scene probably hasn't changed much in the last 50 years. English suburbia clings desperately to its mock Tudor fascia and grass verges.....

Impressive analaogue to digi conversion and thanks for taking us back to an almost forgotten time.

I just looked through your interesting gallery and found this photo. We must be about the same age, I was a trainee in Manchester in 1960 and again in London 1963. I certainly do not recognize this pretty street but I am quite amazed at the quality of this photo. The sharpness and colours are very good. Myself I could only afford B&W in those days... Also a very good scan quality here!
