Photographer's Note
My three latest posts on TE showed the ancient city of Petra in southern Jordan in September 1995. This is NOT Petra, but Jerash in the far north of the country, about 50 km north of the capital Amman.
Jerash is almost as old as Petra, founded a few hundred years before our time. It flourished under Greek and Roman rule as a center for the trade of incense and spices between the Arabian Peninsula and the Mediterranean region.
The area was Christianized under the rule of the Byzantine empire but was taken over by the Muslims in 635 before the city was largely destroyed by Crusaders in 1112.
I spent a few hours in Jerash, but I was rather troubled by the heat and only used two pages of my diary to describe my visit.
Jerash is on the list of proposed Unesco World Heritage sites but has not yet received official status. Among several streets lined with impressive columns, as in the main photo, visitors can see two amphitheatres, a large forum, a hippodrome, Roman baths and the ruins of temples and churches. There is also a museum.
Here is a larger version.
One WS shows a close look at one of the streets, in the other WS old Jerash meets new Jerash.
As usual all these photos were scanned from Kodachrome slides.
The map coordinates 32.27801 35.89097 will take you to approximately where I was standing. Just click at Map: view.

Hello, Gert!
The line of columns gives very good depth to the composition, and the details of the old ruins are really impressive! I like the presence of the people, they give scale and more life and interest to the scene! Wonderful place and composition! Very nice job!

Hi Gert
Great composition with the columns receding into the distance giving a really good sense of perspective and leading the viewer's eye into the hills on the horizon. The man in pink is as good as any lady in red... ;-)
I can confirm that the paths paved with stone had not changed from 1995 to 2018.
Best wishes

Hello Gert,
You chose a great viewpoint for this shot!
The grandeur of the road, with its huge flanking pillars, can be felt in the late 20th century. It must have had an awe inspiring impact when it had been recently built! The two figures are well included, scaling the scene as well as providing a good focal point.
I couldn't help comparing the old city and the new, in your w/s. The old wins both for materials and decorative features
Again, fine scans from slides.
My warm regards,
Bev :-).

I like the photo in WS (a street lined with columns) even more than the main photo, the main photo shows of course the general view but the details in WS are impressive too, great witness of skills of ancient people

Hello Gert
These cities in there glory must have been a site to see. One must use their imagination. A time when men came to conquer and lavish in their plunder with these great tributes as proof for all to see. nice capture of history.

Hello Gert, three informative shots and interesting notes.
I like the W/s shot of the view looking toward the modern city, such a very distinct contrast.
And the close up of the worn stones, I have seen something like this before, yet it still impresses me.
I wonder if the site is busier these days, only you and two other visitors that we know of on this particular day.
It definitely ought to be a UNESCO world heritage site!
Kind regards, Jean.

Hej Gert,

Gert, that vast historical site carries the visitors several centuries back. They are immersed in an unique atmosphere. Some ancient columns are still standing, others collapsed. Stone blocks can be found everywhere in Jerash. The workshop photo shows the modern city in the bg. Fine colors, good image quality, instructive photo note, regards.

Hello, Gert!
Jerash was nice. I do not recall it being too hot. That said, the Dead Sea Valley was about 10c hotter than Amman and Jerash at 44c instead of a manageable 34c. The Greek and Roman influence is obvious. Good sharpness and perspective and the couple of tourists animate the scene. Tfs!

Dear Gert,
This time I like the main upload and one of the WS photos (No2) equally. This one has the human presence, while the other one is very artistic with showing both the modern day city and the ancient one together. Isn't it possible that the other WS was an accidental shot, now you just trying to 'put the ideology behind it'? Just kidding. ;-)
Have a nice evening!

Hello Gert,
Three lovely photos from these great ruins. The most "artsy" one is the close up of the pavement. I like the contrast in "old meets new" photo, too. Well done! 👍🏻👍🏻

Hello Gert,
Excellent composition where you get the impression how it must have been to walk this cobbled street between the mighty buildings on either side, It must have been a very impressive place.
Thanks and regards.

Hi Gert
first off, i LOVE that WS photo (both) of the city view mixed with this old view. Why do we not see that shot all the time? its such a great combo. If i ever go to Jordan, I'll be looking at your shots (cities) before I go. This is just too good. Just a question....what does being officially listed as a Unesco site actually do or mean? Does it mean subjects can't be torn down??? anyways, great pics here. learning alot
cheers

Bonjour, cher Gert,
L’émerveillement est de mise à travers les différentes prises de vue.
Pouvoir plonger dans le passé de cette façon, c'est fabuleux (de plus, les images sont très bien numérisées).
Un grand merci pour l'ensemble;
Amitiés.

Hi Gert.
Here we can follow the path of the old street, which preserves very well its pavement and the large amount of column that remain along it, a great beauty this place, that unfortunately I had no time to visit.
Wonderful those shades of color, excellent sharpness and splendid light.
Very well done. I like very much.
You have a good day.
Very best regards.

Hello Gert,
Only 150km from home, but a place i can't visit, though it has lot's of ancient ruins and history enfolded.
The tall set of column made a fine DOF to the scene.
Wish you a nice weekend,
Ike
