Green Mosque of Bursa, a photo from Bursa, Marmara

Photographer's Note

This is the impressive side chapel of the deservedly famous Green Mosque in Bursa. (Yeşil Camii, "Yeşil Mosque") also known as Mehmed I Mosque. The exterior is fairly ordinary but the interior as depicted here is exquisite. It dates from 1420 AD. More info from Wikipedia here:

Here's a shot I found of the section of the mosque partly covered with green tiles that gives it the 'Green' name.

Hello Chris,

Surely it is the exterior that gives the mosque its name for there is little evidence of green, here. Having made that observation, this is an amazing interior! The patterns are tight, colourful and wonderfully intricate; your clearly captured photograph reveals so much of this detailed artwork.
I like your choice of composition, too, which sets the dome off-centre, the patterns radiating from it like rays from the sun.
I would imagine that some of the pattern, in the lower regions, is actually writing. I wish I could interpret it!

Hello Chris,
I only saw this mosque from the outside but I didn't enter it. Maybe the "fairly ordinary exterior" made me decide to skip it, because I had seen so many great mosques in Istanbul. Finally, after more than 45 years I get to see this nicely decorated dome and the quite beautiful windows. The well handled light makes the viewing a pleasure.

very impressive interior indeed! I like the fragment which you have selected for us here. I always like these attractively designed inscriptions in Arabic, I suppose this would be in old Turkish before they changed alphabet to Latin.

This definitely is impressive. The details are beautiful, and I'm sure a lot of hard work went into creating this art. I wonder why two strips inside the dome have faded colors. Regardless, it's a lovely view. :-)
