300th, Hagia Sophia, a photo from Istanbul, Marmara

Photographer's Note

Thank you to Lisa for making me notice that this photo was my 300th, chance would have it, I chose this picture to illustrate it, because the emotion of my visit to St. Sophia of rare beauty, reflects the emotion that I feel all admire your masterpieces to you also.
A year has passed very quickly and I'm glad I met you through your photos and share together.

Hagia Sophia is covered by a central dome with a diameter of 31 meters (102 feet), slightly smaller than the Pantheon's. The dome seems rendered weightless by the unbroken arcade of arched windows under it, which help flood the colorful interior with light. The dome is carried on pendentives: four concave triangular sections of masonry which solve the problem of setting the circular base of a dome on a rectangular base. In Hagia Sophia the weight of the dome passes through the pendentives to four massive piers at the corners. Between them the dome seems to float upon four great arches.

At the western (entrance) and eastern (liturgical) ends, the arched openings are extended by half domes carried on smaller semidomed exedras. Thus a hierarchy of dome-headed elements build up to create a vast oblong interior crowned by the main dome, a sequence unexampled in antiquity.

The structure has been severely damaged several times by earthquakes. The dome collapsed after an earthquake in 558; its replacement fell in 563. There were additional partial collapses in 989 and 1346.

All interior surfaces are sheathed with polychrome marbles, green and white with purple porphyry and gold mosaics, encrusted upon the brick. On the exterior, simple stuccoed walls reveal the clarity of massed vaults and domes.

ce n'est jamais facile de rendre ce genre de prise de vue. Tu es r徼ssi une belle prise avec une tr鋊 belle gestion de la lumi鋨e. Celle arrivant de l'ext廨ieure ne "crame" pas tout et on peut profiter des nombreux d彋ails de cet int廨ieur. Beau travail.

Dear Val廨ie,

I love this shot almost as much as I love the place itself. I cannot believe that the 1500 year old edifice is not among the second list compiled the 'Seven Wonders!' By focusing on the illuminated balcony (it may be "the mihrab"). Did you know that on a balcony in the Second Floor Gallery you can see 1200-year old Viking Grafitti. Please, don't worry about writing a critique, but it appears to the right of where I took this photo.

Ta photo ne nous montre qu'une petite partie de cette magnifique mosqu嶪, mais elle nous laisse bien deviner la beaut� de cet 嶮ifice.
J'aime beaucoup la fa蔞n dont tu as su capturer la lumi鋨e de la "chaire", qui se marie bien avec la couleur or des d獽es, et donne un bon contraste avec la marbre gris des colonnes.
La lumi鋨e de certains vitraux 彋ait plus difficile � g廨er; j'ai moi-m瘱e fait cette exp廨ience dans une mosqu嶪 d'Antalya.
Bravo pour ta 300� photo!
