Photographer's Note

Zeytinlik騽, the birthplace of the first Bartholomew.

Place of birth of the present Ecumenical Patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Church Bartholomew (1940), Zeytinlik騽 is a village which, as its name suggests, is surrounded by olive groves. It is located on the island of G闥蔒ada (Imbros).

Formerly Aghii Theodori, here we just enjoy various specialties of the island: Dibek Kahvesi (in coffee from Madam Dibek, which is no longer of this world), and the cicirya (sort of white pizza adorned with cheese, thyme and egg) or the vişinada (drink cherry).

One enters a quiet village with stone houses, but most were abandoned in the last century. Less than 80 people live in this village now.

The schools have fallen into ruins, after their closures (this measure is school hell幯ophones of the island and date of the second half of the 20th century). One can only just see the remnants of the old primary school housed the village children.
