Roman Ephesus
Beginning in the Roman Republic, Ephesus was the capital of proconsular Asia, which covered the western part of Asia Minor. The original city of Ephesus was located on low ground, and was completely flooded by the sea. The city was rebuilt by Lysimachus, who destroyed the cities of Lebedos and Colophon in 292BC and relocated their inhabitants to the new city.
The city bore the title of "the first and greatest metropolis of Asia." It was distinguished for the Temple of Artemis (Diana), who had her chief shrine there, for its library, and for its theatre, which would have been capable of holding 25,000 spectators. It was, like all ancient theatres, open to the sky; it was used initially for drama, but during later Roman times gladiatorial combats were also held on its stage. The population of Ephesus has been estimated to be in the range of 400,000 to 500,000 inhabitants in the year 100 AD, making it the largest city in Roman Asia and one of the largest cities of the day. Ephesus also had several major bath complexes, built at various points while the city was under Roman rule. The city had one of the most advanced aqueduct systems in the ancient world, with multiple aqueducts of various sizes to supply different areas of the city, including 4 major aqueducts.
The house of the Virgin Mary, about 7 km from Selçuk, is said by the Roman Catholic Church to have been the last home of the Virgin Mary and is a popular place of pilgrimage.

ODEON
It is located in the south of the State Agora and had the aspect of a small theatre. Therefore it is called “Smaller Theatre”. According to an inscription found during the excavations carried out here it was constructed by Vedius Antonius and his wife Papiana in the second century A.D. as a bouleterion. The Odeon built on the skirts of Mt. Pion, as it is seen in theatres, consisted of three main parts: “cavea”,”orchestra” and “skene”. Cavea is semi-circular and the skene probably was two storied. Just in front it there was a narrow podium made of marble. Access from skene into podium was provided thorough five gates. The orchestra is also semi-circular. As there is a gutter for rainwater it is thought that the Odeon was covered with a wooden roof. This structure was devoted both to civic meetings and musical and theatrical performances. It seated 1400 people.

Hi Tolga,
I like your upwards perspective. The green hill contrasts the ruins nicely. I think it's a bit unfortunate that one column is cut in half.
I'm looking forward to seeing the other photos!

Simon

Hi Chris,
A good point of view and a fine composition, my friend!
You capture the textures in the old rocks very well, and the combination of colours in the image make it very attractive!
