Outstanding detail in this image. The contrast between the intricate patters in near-monochrome shades and the blue sign in the distance works very well. This is in part because you have situated it right in the frame. That is, centrally in the distance where the eye will wander off in order to get a fix-point. Also a very good choice to NOT include sky and/or horizon. This makes the patterned motive much stronger and provides an overall more dynamic image. Well seen and well composed.

This beautiful cake-looking cit is spoiled by those signs of modernity (Simens and antenna, etc).
Other people would have probably cloned out those items, but you used to show the contrast. Good idea.

Hey John,

Signs of the times title says it well.

Over-filling the frame takes us into the structural exterior details of these buidlings. The blue signages distracts the attention but somehow gives the contrast between the 'old and new ' signs of the times as you have titled makes a lot of sense. You may have defined the place of being modernised with technology but retaining the architectural 'character' of this beautiful old city.

Congratulations reaching your '100th' posting. You have not only posted images here but also reached out to hundreds of viewers, shared your views and critiqued many who had stayed long in this community because of your presence. Your presence here , the relationship and photos shared will always be treasured...I don''t have a drink to cheer on but here's to...Dumplings! (what I'm now having for lunch at this moment)

Very nice 200th image! (Or any other number.) This is a busy shot, but not overly so, as most of the busyness comes from repetition rather than competing images. It's almost but not quite monochromatic, which not only brings out the Siemens and other blue signs, but also the orange-ish clothes in lower right. I do find the concrete buildings in the rear jarring, in that they diminish the anachronism of the Siemens sign, but there is no way to exclude them. Then there's the satellite dish I just found - in other words, a lot to explore in this image.

And it gives a good sense of how it must feel down on the street, too.

I like billboards but sometimes they are an eyesore, specially in old, historic quarters. The architecture of this place is quite beautiful. The colours and designs are different from what I know. Good cropping and saturation of buildings. Thanks John.

Hi John,

I think that it is a good photo. It is simple as it shows a contrast of beautyful architecture together with a less intersting modern construction style, it is good because it shows, to a person like me, how and what a citizen or tourist walking those streets would see or feel. The details of daily life like a black water tank and some aluminium tanks for the daily need of water, some clothes hanging in order to get dry by the sun, an open window with some sheets breathing the morning air, a satellite dish probably pointing to Dubuai and finally the disturbing propaganda of a big multinational company makes this picture a great depiction of one morning in Sana, Jemen.

Fascinating place. You caught this architecture extremely well, the tones are wonderful and the white parts have a very special textures. Interesting blue Siemens sign in the middle of this so traditional looking city. Congrats on your 100th.

I really don't know what your matter is. You state that you ran out of good shots and than you present this here. What do you want to hear? Certainly the challenge: NO, John! This is a good shot and I love it?
This image gives me a much better understanding of the interesting architecture compared to David's post. It is quite interesting to see the harsh light providing almost vertical shadows enhancing the architectural elements. The POV is great and the inclusion of Siemens and Visa is a quite appropriate for the exact purpose that you discussed so well in your note.

Hi John. You are right - these look just like gingerbread houses. Sana'a is such a photogenic place (I recall seeing some great shots by Tan Yilmaz from there last year) that it is high on my list of 'must visit' places. I tried cropping out the advertising billboards to see what that would look like, but that didn't work because removing the modern buildings in the background (as ugly as they are) also removes much of the scale reference. I agree with David Grant that the image does lack a focal point, but it's still nevertheless an interesting and educational photograph. Cheers . . . David
