Photographer's Note
Well, after agonizing about posting a great photo for the coveted "100th", I finally came to the conclusion that I am just about out of good photos again. That, combined with seeing an excellent shot of Sana'a from David Grant today, spurred me to post one of my Old City shots from the city.
This shot really reminded me of the encroaching signs of the times, shown by the blue Siemens & Visa signs, that are slowly encroaching on a small square of the earth that has changed very little in the last couple hundred years. Technology is slowly changing Sana'a for the good of the people who live there, but not for those who go to see an older, less civilized Arabia.
This was taken on one of the rooftops in the Old City. An old city I like to refer to as a lifesize gingerbread house city.
Let me know what you think,
John

Outstanding detail in this image. The contrast between the intricate patters in near-monochrome shades and the blue sign in the distance works very well. This is in part because you have situated it right in the frame. That is, centrally in the distance where the eye will wander off in order to get a fix-point. Also a very good choice to NOT include sky and/or horizon. This makes the patterned motive much stronger and provides an overall more dynamic image. Well seen and well composed.
Best,
Mikkel

Well seen John!!
This beautiful cake-looking cit is spoiled by those signs of modernity (Simens and antenna, etc).
Other people would have probably cloned out those items, but you used to show the contrast. Good idea.
Well framed, and congratulations for your 100th post.

Hi John,
Another good shot of the amazing artistic detail and architecture of Yemen. I like the tight cropping as it emphasises the artistic work on the buildigs and the criss-crossing lines creaed by the buildings are effective. But you're right, the modern advertising signage is spoiling the ancient feel of the place....you've depicted it effectively. Congratulatons on your 100th posting.
Cheers Grant

Hey John,
Signs of the times title says it well.
Over-filling the frame takes us into the structural exterior details of these buidlings. The blue signages distracts the attention but somehow gives the contrast between the 'old and new ' signs of the times as you have titled makes a lot of sense. You may have defined the place of being modernised with technology but retaining the architectural 'character' of this beautiful old city.
Congratulations reaching your '100th' posting. You have not only posted images here but also reached out to hundreds of viewers, shared your views and critiqued many who had stayed long in this community because of your presence. Your presence here , the relationship and photos shared will always be treasured...I don''t have a drink to cheer on but here's to...Dumplings! (what I'm now having for lunch at this moment)
All the best!

Hi John,
A very interesting view and also very comic with that blue Siemens sign. Not something i would expect in Yemen.
Your tight crop is wonderful, gives a perfect view over the rooftops and those little white arches as they use as windows look very lovely.
A very clever composed image...a real good one.

John -
Very nice 200th image! (Or any other number.) This is a busy shot, but not overly so, as most of the busyness comes from repetition rather than competing images. It's almost but not quite monochromatic, which not only brings out the Siemens and other blue signs, but also the orange-ish clothes in lower right. I do find the concrete buildings in the rear jarring, in that they diminish the anachronism of the Siemens sign, but there is no way to exclude them. Then there's the satellite dish I just found - in other words, a lot to explore in this image.
And it gives a good sense of how it must feel down on the street, too.

I like billboards but sometimes they are an eyesore, specially in old, historic quarters. The architecture of this place is quite beautiful. The colours and designs are different from what I know. Good cropping and saturation of buildings. Thanks John.

Interesting city view on your 100th, you have framed it well by the beautiful white-brown architecture building and some 'interesting' details like siemens, blue billboard, satelite dish and even the dried cloths on the corner i really don't care about that and you can't clone them out. It just a part of your beautiful presentation from the city of Sana'a. Well done John, keep on posting whereever you are. Thanks :-)

Hello John
COngratulations on your 100th,
very nice repetitive patterns caputred here,
the siemens sign provides a nice contrast;
I am hoping to go there at the end of this year.

Hi John,
I think that it is a good photo. It is simple as it shows a contrast of beautyful architecture together with a less intersting modern construction style, it is good because it shows, to a person like me, how and what a citizen or tourist walking those streets would see or feel. The details of daily life like a black water tank and some aluminium tanks for the daily need of water, some clothes hanging in order to get dry by the sun, an open window with some sheets breathing the morning air, a satellite dish probably pointing to Dubuai and finally the disturbing propaganda of a big multinational company makes this picture a great depiction of one morning in Sana, Jemen.
Soon you will get new pictures!!

Hi John,
Indeed the houses look sugar coated. Sidelight on those walls is excellent. Strong lines give rhyhm to the scene. And collision of cultures is apparent. Sandly I can imagine what this scene looks like within next ten years...

Hi John
Firstly congratulations on your 100th post.
This shot is so funny with the lovely old buildings contrasting with the satellite dish and modern advertising. I like how the colours of the clothes create a focal point.

A pretty good shot here of Sana'a, but not one of your best.
Your idea is good with the Siemens sign, showing the encroaching change of time in Yemen, but for me this picture doesn't work. It seems to be lacking a focal point, I suppose the Siemens sign is the idea, and of course the beautiful buildings capture your attention...but maybe it's the modern buildings in the background that ruin this photo for me. I'm not sure...
Just my honest critique of your 100th post, and after seeing the quality of your shots, this one doesn't live up to your other ones.

Fascinating place. You caught this architecture extremely well, the tones are wonderful and the white parts have a very special textures. Interesting blue Siemens sign in the middle of this so traditional looking city. Congrats on your 100th.

John,
I really don't know what your matter is. You state that you ran out of good shots and than you present this here. What do you want to hear? Certainly the challenge: NO, John! This is a good shot and I love it?
This image gives me a much better understanding of the interesting architecture compared to David's post. It is quite interesting to see the harsh light providing almost vertical shadows enhancing the architectural elements. The POV is great and the inclusion of Siemens and Visa is a quite appropriate for the exact purpose that you discussed so well in your note.

I like many of your recent photos, this one attracts me specially for its POV and because I dream to go there one day - the modern signs and antennas add something unique and incongruous to the whole photo,
Bravo,
Cath.

The houses look like gingerbreads with frosting. It's like Hansel and Grethel. And all of a sudden there's commercial in it... Fun picture / Elisabet

Hi John. You are right - these look just like gingerbread houses. Sana'a is such a photogenic place (I recall seeing some great shots by Tan Yilmaz from there last year) that it is high on my list of 'must visit' places. I tried cropping out the advertising billboards to see what that would look like, but that didn't work because removing the modern buildings in the background (as ugly as they are) also removes much of the scale reference. I agree with David Grant that the image does lack a focal point, but it's still nevertheless an interesting and educational photograph. Cheers . . . David

Hi John,
excellent close crop of the roof of the magic Sana'a. The sign of Siemens pop out of the image!
This is a dreamy place anyway and I'm sure I will return!
A smile
