"Mistaya River", a photo from Alberta, Prairies

Photographer's Note

Well some of you may recognize this shot from one of my previous postings, which is why I was going to post this as a 'repost', however- technically it's not the same shot.
Looking back at the previous version- I wasn't too happy with the white balance, and I find this one is more true to the actual color.

Ryan (euryan) made comment on my last posting, that it was a bit 'dull' (I appreciate his honesty)- so I'm hoping this one makes up for it?

Goodo Morning Dan. I do like the setting and can see you had some challenges with exposure in the sky. I see you chose F22 to blur the water a little which I do like as well. I have found a tremendous difference in split second shutter speeds ranging from 1/6, 1/5, 1/4 and even 1/3 of a second. The river here has a natural feel to it, showing you know well what you are doing when you chose 1/5th of a second...butter butter..trying to encourage you..
The thought occurred to me that if you look at the river the photo looks level. But if you look at the trees it looks to me like the photo is tilted to the right a little. Might be the distortion on the lens but I doubt the Canon 24-70 L would create that. Overall nice shot Dan.

Hi, Dan -

A kind of nebbish day, but this shot makes the best of it. I like the way the water blurs in front while looking regular in the distance. The curve of the trees against the mountains is also good.

Hi Dan:

Much, much better. I remember seeing your last one and thinking that it was a fabulous shot other than the blue cast. This one definitely makes up for the last one in my opinion, though I think the last one was good enough given the weather. The clouds encircling the mountains are fabulous.

I'm headed there in a couple months, and though I've been to Banff many times I've never been to Mistaya Canyon. Is this along the Mistaya Canyon trail? If so, this will definitely be added to my itinerary. :) Great shot.

Hello Dan,

Good to see you are posting pictures of the Rockies again. Such a beautiful place they are and so wild and rugged. The image is very nice because of the view and also because the colours are not too saturated. In fact they look perfect for a cloudy day in the Rockies. Nice perspective of this legendary river. Tr鋊 r徼ssie cette photo. Le ciel tr鋊 nuageux nous procure une toute autre dynamique des couleurs que tu as su exploiter � la perfection. (ぺ nous repose de ces photos trop satur嶪s!) Le cadrage est super. Personnellement j'aurais pr嶨廨� un temps de pose plus court: je ne suis pas un fanatique de cette eau tr鋊 liss嶪...

Nicely composed with the river winding in front of our eyes. I like the placement of the two smaller trees on the right.

You're right, Dan, the color is better here than in the other shot. It's not exciting color under that cloudy sky, but it's very natural. The mineral-blue glacial water adds some color. The exposure looks very even, from the darkest to the lightest areas, which must have taken some work, well done. Regards, Ken.
