The Athabasca Falls (and the Athabasca River) originate with the Columbia Glacier (and the Columbia Icefields) to the south of Jasper National Park. "Athabasca", the name, originates with a Woods Cree word signifying "where there are plants one after another". From the start, it travels 1,231 kilometres overall - the equivalent being 765 miles. The Falls are known less for height than the volume of water which passes through them virtually year round. The River, recognizing its history, has been designated a Canadian Heritage River.
