Photographer's Note

The Columbian Ground Squirrel is quite common throughout the rockies.

This is one of a small group that are located literally right outside the Vistitor Centre Doors at Rogers Pass. I guess they're fairly opportunistic as they realise that the visiting toursits are more interested in getting some photos of them and feeding them then harming them.

This little guy let me get right up close to him. At one point he kind of startled me as all I could see through the viewfinder was him coming towards me. I can only imagine how sharp those teeth were, and I didn't want him mistaking one of my fingers as a tasty treat!

I like your wildlife shot - its very close up so well done for achieving that.

The well focused head and eye were important in its success.

Hi Dan,
Either this little guy recognized a fellow member of the species or you were using some food to lure him...The crisp clear look here is amazing, as well as the retention of resolution with the fur and grasses. What were the final dimensions of the frame for TE? I find it impossible to retain quality without massive compression where leaves and grasses are concerned unless I drastically reduce the size of the photo for posting. Please do not tell me that the 5D overcomes this. Finally, did you use your magical 50 ISO on this? A fine capture, Dan.
