Drying Seal Skins, a photo from Nunavut, Northern

Photographer's Note

Across the bay from Clyde River is where the old settlement originated. During the summer, there are about 8 - 10 tents set up. The elders especially like to move over to the "other side" as it has better weather. I snapped a couple of photos of these seal skins out drying thinking I would take more in the morning, but unfortunately they had all been taken down. The seal skins are either sold or used for clothing i.e. mitts. The meat is eaten or used for dog food. I don't think much goes to waste.

Hi Vera! It is nice to see the north in spring and summer too! The photo conveys a sense of ... peeking through the grass as a secret observer of this more traditional way of life. In Iqaluit too, there are many camps across the bay. We haven't been lucky enough to go over there as we don't own a boat. There are also some closer camps. David has been inside one of these tents when unoccupied, and his photo that he returned with is quite amazing!

Composition could be just a bit stronger, with maybe a bit more of the left side included, slightly different exposure ... but you were rushed at that time. I think you know these things already. I'm happy to see this photo!

Hi Vera. I like the foreground with sunny grass. The skins, drying in the wind and the tent are well captured. May be the icy sea is over-exposed but it's not easy to take this kind of picture.
