Photographer's Note
Studio Bell
Many of you enjoyed the modern architecture of the Calgary Public Library, but there is more striking contemporary architecture in Calgary.
Not far from the library you can find Study Bell the first facility of its kind in North America.
All in One, a performance hall, recording facility, broadcast studio, live music venue and a museum.
From 2016 brought together in nine subtly curved and interlocking towers, clad in glazed terra cotta.
The complex also incorporates the revitalized King Edward Hotel, one of Calgary's oldest buildings and a legendary blues club.
The design is by Brad Cloepfil of Allied Works Architecture.
A Word from Architect Brad Cloepfil:
“Studio Bell is a gathering of resonant vessels that stand as sentinels to Calgary’s East Village. The building is a silent and powerful instrument that exists to emanate music and light. Nine towers form the body of the building; the walls, clad in terra cotta, rise in subtle curves that merge, part, and intertwine, modeled by light, gravity, and acoustics.
Entering from the street, the building is filled with the reverberation of voices and music, drawing visitors up into five floors of performance, exhibit, and collections spaces. The apertures at each gallery create a threshold of sound, introducing the content and programs of the particular exhibition. The spaces between are filled with light and activity, with views that frame the city and landscape beyond.
Bridging across the street and back again, the building creates a gateway for the new quarter, uniting the artists’ residences, club, and recording studios with the new presentation spaces. The building binds audience and performer, student and teacher, the body and the collection. “

Hello Rob,
Going from the main photo to #3 you gradually make us understand what we are seeing. While the main photo shows us the elegant curve of a façade and the pattern and smoothness of the tiles, we begin to see in #2 a smart solution for incorporating an old building into a new. The last photo tells us all about it and also gives us the foreground view of the basketball court full of young people. I am amazed to see how the old hotel looks embedded in the new complex. It looks like a great example of careful urban renewal.
Best regards,
Gert

The main picture gives much to the imagination, prior to open the #2 WS photo, Rob. Than, comprehend what we see here.
A fine view of each brick in the concave façade.
Good afternoon,
Ike

Hallo Rob,
De foto van deze moderne gevel laat een mooi patroon zien, zeker in dit heldere licht voordat even later de bewolking binnen zou trekken. Over Calgary gesproken, ik zag dat die toren nog steeds gesloten is.

Hello Rob,
Thanks for sharing more beautiful, modern architecture. This facade is great, and I like your chosen POV for the main photo. The metallic color looks great against the bright, blue sky. I also like seeing more of the buildings, and the skybridge, in the WS photos.

Hallo Rob,

Bedankt.
Groeten uit Vlaanderen,
John

A fascinating and most informative note and three delightful photographs to illustrate it.
Your images look so must better when viewed at full size and we can then appreciate their very well thought out composition and the lovely light, true colours and exceptional sharpness of each one. A perfect upload for TE. Thank you.
Excellent!
Kind Regards,

Hello Rob, this is an amazing building, and your three shots help us to appreciate just how wonderful it is.
The skill of the builders in creating such clean lines, not a tile out of place,
It must have been an ambitious project.
Your notes are very informative, thank you.
Regards Jean.

Hi Rob
what has Calgary been doing to itself????
I've never seen this side of Calgary before, good to see, good to add some much needed modern architecture and flare into that city. and i'm glad you're posting them. Looking at this shot you'd think you were in Las Vegas or something :) interesting how the panels are further apart on the right, and of course I enjoy the UP pov. and thanks for the WS photos to give us that overall look. good one. cheers
