Photographer's Note

Madeleine de Vercheres... a famous hero in the Canadian history. She was 14, on October 27th 1692, when she was attacked by Iroquois with other people while they were working in the fields outside the fort. She ran to the fort but an Iroquois caught her by her scarf. She succeeded in getting loose and reached the fort where she acted as a leader with other women and children to hold the fort, running from one place to the other and wearing men's hats to make them believe that there were a lot of men in the fort. They held the fort 8 days before help arrived. Is this a real story, is this a legend, we might never know, but this bronze statue in the small city of Vercheres makes us recall that during the time of the colony women were often called to be brave and to defend themselves when their husbands were in the fields or out trapping in the woods.
