Photographer's Note

By the time my driver returned, having applied the ointment for relief of insect bites received in the jungle, I had spotted a small group of colourfully dressed young men standing around the base of a tall pole. I could scarcely believe it, but these were voladores - flyers - who had appeared in my guidebook as attractions at El Tajin in Veracruz State. I asked Girardo to please find out what a performance would cost so I could take some photographs. It was perfect - there were no tourist buses around, and I wanted an "exclusive". The cost was inconsequential and quickly agreed. I took up a position with the light in the right direction and an unobstructed view of the performance. I never expected this in Tulum!
