Photographer's Note
‘Tamil Nadu - Madurai - Meeting in the street’
So far I’ve shown only one portrait on this site. In general I am not very good at taking portraits. But the fact is also that I usually don't dare.
I often saw that John dares to make portraits in the streets in Belgium.
So I thought I had to take some in India. Almost nobody objects there to taking pictures.
However, with my previous portrait ‘Lady in yellow’ there were a few comments that they didn't really like portraits. I wonder why … I’m only afraid that the people might find me too intrusive.
So I first ask very politely and in India people smile and say 'yes'.
This simple man I met on the street also said yes. But I saw that he didn’t understand why a foreigner would want a picture of him. Afterwards I showed him the photo on my camera but I know he will never see it on a computer.

Hello Paul,
This is a great portrait, so you should take such photos more often. At least in India, where anything seems to be possible. To me he looks like an old rock star who may have had some hits in the late 1960's. He seems slightly better preserved than Keith Richards. I would have loved to take this photo, but I was more courageous when I was younger and had a more advanced camera with a tele lens, which meant I didn't have to stick the camera right up people's nose.
While the WS from the flower market is another fairly regular Indian street scene, the photo of the soothsayer (or was he perhaps a foot therapist?) is wonderful. It could have been another main upload.
Best regards,
Gert

hello Paul, In India, Japan and China the people are delighted seeing that someone is taking their picture, and very other they thank YOU for photographing them. So it is the best occasion trying to make portraits. Besides, they look so exotic and colourful for us. Here you were very close and have got a fantastic result. He looks like alive. what dies he think about, we wonder. Hah, I never ask permission. Seeing an old woman the people are friendly and smile seeing the camera. I like the picture with the feet. Funny observation.
Kind regards MAlgo

Hallo Paul,
Ik ben ook niet zo erg van de portretfotografie zelf, maar dat is inderdaad ook omdat ik het niet zo durf. Dit portret is uitstekend van het markante gezicht van de man, uitstekende scherpte ook. Mooi werk.

Hi Paul,i'm not a protrait fan but sometimes it's nice to see one, especially when unique and curious like that. It's good to read the indian people agree to be photographed as i can read in your note. Excellent post as usual with the 2 scenes in the WS,obviously i prefere the pic with the flowers,a very colorful composition. Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Hi Paul
Portraits have to be more than just a face for me to appreciate them. This one qualifies as a great one with his craggy face, red head band and white forehead. keep doing them.
cheers

An excellent close-up portrait, paul.
Face expression looks to be a bit mysterious... yet a good clear photo.

Hello Paul
A fantastic portrait with excellent clarity, exposure and colours. The bright red turban, the garlands (rudraksha mala) and the smear of ash on the forehead are very eye catching details.
Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend.

An eye catching photo, the red turban is very attractive, the man seems to be lost in thought, maybe he was meditating at the moment, a very nice portrait

I also often find that people, especially elderly, are surprised (more often than not, pleasantly surprised) that someone finds enough interest in them to ask permission to take their photo.
I think it's a great portrait, you should definitely do it more often. :-)
Have a nice weekend

Hi Paul
thanks for the time and effort you put into my last critique, I really appreciate that. Seems that my post is getting alot of comments, which is a good thing, even if we don't all agree :)
as for your scene here, its impossible to pass up on it, its so full frame he's impossible to miss haha. Its great that you showed him the photo on the camera, I think that's important and it completes the interaction between camera man and subject. Its also the polite thing to do :) Nothing to complain about here, I like it, we can see all his wrinkles and character. cheers

Hello Paul,
Like you, I often share the portrait photograph with the sitter, if I have asked their permission first. It just seems like good manners. I must admit though, I think it is easier for female photographers to take people pictures, for obvious reasons.
I don't know why anyone would object to a portrait photograph, I think they are so expressive! I like this one particularly, it tells so much about age, character, customs and dress.
It's a fine, sharp close-up.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Paul,
A fantastic head and shoulders portrait of the elderly Indian man with a red turban and a whitened forehead. Good use of a shallow dof with great sharpness. Tfs!

Bonjour Paul,
Marie-Louise.

I don't like to take portraits because if I ask to take a photo many people want money or make rigid poses.
nice close portrait, the face of the old man tell the hard life he had.
take care
