Photographer's Note

Last night a lightning storm quietly swept over Toronto. It was interesting because there was no thunder. Only a brief rain as the clouds moved in that lasted about 20 minutes. High above me I could see stars and it appeared that the storm was over. The sky over the city to the south appeared as a typical night sky. To my surprise an electrical storm developed high in the clouds revealing the enormous depth of the clouds that were invisible in the darkness of night. Up until then the sky looked so tranquil and I couldn't help but think what it would have been like to have been a sailor coming across the ocean a few hundred years ago. I am sure many captains have experienced the same illusion only to have found that they are sailing directly into a storm. The storm lasted for about two hours yielding hundreds of lightning strikes in the clouds.
