The "city of the lake" is the nickname of Trakai, the historical capital of Lithuania. It boasts not only of being the pride of the city but of all of Lithuania, being the only castle in Eastern Europe, built on an island.
Do you believe in legends? People say that Trakai was built on the whim of a woman. The wife of Duke Kestutis, called Birute, who did not like living in the old Trakai because there was very little water around, something she was used to in her house in Palanga. Therefore, Kęstutis, in order to please his wife, began, towards the middle of the fourteenth century, the construction of a new castle on a peninsula surrounded by lakes.

The magnificent complex of the Trakai Castle built on an island, became a place of residence for the dukes of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania). The castle, of Gothic style, is composed of a palace built by medieval masters and a tower used as a residential tower. These buildings were surrounded by a well-designed and high wall, very solid and surrounded by the waters of Lake Galve. The castle lost its political power when the capital of the Grand Duchy was moved from Trakai to Vilnius. However, for a long time it remained the favorite residence of the nobility of the GDL and their families. In the sixteenth century the castle became a prison for nobles, prisoners of war, who were detained here. In 1962, the restored castle became part of the Trakai History Museum.

All those who are interested in history and in mysterious places, should visit the Castle of Trakai. This place is one of the most visited tourist sites in Lithuania. It has a wooden bridge of 300 meters that leads to the castle and has a 12 km long canal that connects the lakes. In addition, halls and galleries of indescribable beauty, stained glass windows, frescoes and secret passages, fascinate even those who are indifferent to history. Today, the castle is the home of the history museum, often hosting medieval tournaments, concerts and craft fairs.

The lakes around Trakai invite you to swimming, sailing, water biking, canoeing and you can also visit the wetlands located near Trakai.

La ciudad del lago es el apodo de Trakai, la capital hist鏎ica de Lituania. Se jacta no s鏊o de ser el orgullo de la ciudad sino de toda Lituania, siendo el nico castillo en Europa del Este, construido en una isla.
