Photographer's Note

After a long and difficult trail in 4x4 we are at Ushguli. The road is really impervious, but it's really worth getting there. Scenarios are unique, and what I show you is the small church, located on a hilltop near the village dates back to the 12th century, overlooking the valley. In the 2 WS you can also see a part of its interior and the decorated ceiling.Compared to somewhat more developed towns like Mestia, Ushguli has been "saved" by its particularly inaccessible location, which helped preserve the villages' timeless feel.Ushguli is located at an altitude of 2,100 metres (6,900 ft) near the foot of Shkhara, one of the highest summits of the Greater Caucasus mountains. About 70 families (about 200 people) live in the area, enough to support a small school. The area is snow-covered for 6 months of the year, and often the road to Mestia is impassable.
Typical Svaneti defensive towers are found throughout the village.
The Mikhail Kalatozov silent film documentary Salt for Svanetia was filmed in Ushguli.

Dopo un lungo e difficile percorso in 4x4 siamo ad Ushguli. La strada � davvero impervia, ma vale davvero la pena arrivare fino a qui. Gli scenari sono unici, e quella che vi mostro � la piccola chiesa del XII secolo che domina la vallata. Nei 2 WS potete anche vedere una parte del suo interno e il soffitto decorato. Usghuli � situato ai piedi del monte Shkhara, la vetta pi� alta della Georgia. Nel villaggio vivono circa 70 famiglie (200 persone) ed � presente anche una piccola scuola.
La zona � coperta dalla neve per sei mesi all'anno, rendendo impraticabile la via di collegamento con Mestia.
In quest'area sono conservate pi� di duecento torri medievali, tipiche della Svanezia.

Hello Luciano,
It's a stunning scenery and its easy to understand that this area is so almost inaccessible as you describe in the note. This is far away from any place I saw in Georgia. The photo is well divided in two sections along a diagonal. The church is very simple but I like the WS showing the interior. The faith expressed through the simple details is rather touching, even to a dedicated non-believer as I.

The awesome mountains sight was worth the long and difficult ride on a 4X4 vehicle, Luciano.
The snowy slopes of the higher terrain wonderfully in contrast to green and brown.

Thank you for the interesting notes which accompany your photograph.
You really have captured the character of this uniquely isolated place. It immediately feels lost, sitting on a hiltop, surrounded by the might of the formidable hills and cloud-topped mountains.
How do the people live?
Do they have places for agriculture?
They must be quite self-sufficient to endure being cut off for long periods of time.

stavo pensando alle duecento torri, sono veramente tante e da tanti anni, con un clima che di sicuro non aiuta la conservazione, ci� nonostante ci stai mostrando delle cose bellissime.
I due ws sono meravigliosi, sembra che qui sia rimasto tutto intatto da quando � stato pitturato.

Ciao Luciano, The road to Ushguli is quite hard and imagine it with a lot of snow around. I was a bit scared. But it is worth all the effort. Wonderful view of the Shkara peaks and this lovely monastery. wonderful composition. They say it is the highest village in Europe where people live all the year but is it Europe??
My favorite mountain view was Ushba on the way.

It would be a hard way to get to this village at considerable height, but the views are worth it, spectacular mountains in the background covered with snow and the preque鎙 church on top of this mountain, I love it for its simplicity and medieval charm.
Its interior with the old paintings, is impressive in its simplicity.
Good perspective of the image, very pleasing to the eye.
Colorful, sharp and bright are captured excellently.

Joking aside this is a spectacular view! Amazing contribution to your reportage which is so full of various aspects of this interesting country.
Here a great combination of the nature and human presence.
The snow covered peaks in the clouds are so photogenic and everything cut through with a diagonal green mountain in front to add an eye catching geometry.
Breath taking, it was worth of every effort to get there!

This setting is magical. It must be amazing to be so close to the mountains, and have this kind of scene outside your front door. Of course, as you mentioned, this village is isolated, and the weather must get very harsh, but during the warmer months it looks so serene.

Luciano, that grandiose mountain landscape gives a glimpse of the Caucasus range beauty. The summits crowned by permanent snow in summer form a stunning background.
