Photographer's Note

Is it an animal or a vegetable? Is it a horse? A fish? A seaweed?

It's the leafy seadragon from Australia! The "leaves" are skin filaments that hang off its head and tail and closely resemble the blades of brown kelp (in the background) that flourish in its native southern Australia.

Seadragons are relatives of seahorses but they have laterally flattened body and swim horizontally. They don't have scales but instead, have armorlike plates.

Like yesterday's weedy seadragon, this leafy one is on exhibit at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium, the "World's Aquarium."

Tech: Like yesterday's posting, this was also taken under not so ideal circumstances (no tripod, many people competing for viewing, dark aquarium, reflection on glass) but you have to make do with what you've got. This one is the original picture but oversharpened (two passes through unsharp mask 50% and 25%) after resizing. No compensation for glare at the top (actually the its the source of lighting for the aquarium).
