Photographer's Note
Roughlock Falls
Spearfish Canyon
The Black Hills
South Dakota
Custer State Park in the South and Spearfish Canyon in the North are my two favorite areas in the Black Hills for natural beauty.
The workshop image is just to give more of an impression of this beautiful canyon area.
As you are driving down Spearfish Canyon stop at the Latchstring Inn.
Roughlock Falls is accessed by road or trail to the West and Spearfish Falls by a short trail to the East.
I didn't know of the road to Roughlock and about wiped out my two little girls with walking to both falls.
This area was used for the final scenes of the film "Dances with Wolves"

Roughlock Falls is on a tributary canyon. The name comes from a wagon road that once ran up the canyon. Wagoneers coming down the steep grade by the falls used to "rough lock" their wheels - lash them in place and skid the wagons down the slope.

Hello John -
Very, very nice. Only one small highlight burn but nothing to damage the image. The veiling is spot on. Was the canyon really dark when you processed the image? The reason I ask is there appears to be a bit of noise in the shadows. Well done.
Thank you for sharing.

Hi John,
Very effective slow exposure and management of light renders an enchanted view of this magnificent falls. The golden shadows on the vibrant greens does wonders to this fine image.

That is a nice little waterfall. The place looks beautiful and really peaceful. The picture is good but a bit dark on the water fall. I believe you were there at the wrong time of the day and of course you got the shadow over the fall. Anyway, sometimes we simply can not be at the right place at the right time. Well done.

Hi John.
The first thing I see it superb here, is the lightness, you have balanced it very very good.
The parts where the sun shines give a great impress.
The colors are very nice, the time exposure is very good chosen for this excellent flowing effect from the water.
Cheers

Hi John,
Well composed with good clarity of detail and a fine smooth result on the waterfall. Although you would have preferred greater light on the main subject, there is good ambience here with the surrounding foliage bathed in warmth. Thanks also for the fine WS. Cheers...later.

Hi John,
Impressive and beautiful waterfall, with water's texture so caractheristic of your shots, and so beautiful! I like very much the light over some leaves, it gives a great relief! Great shot! Thanks.

Bonjour John,
Bon cadrage.
Take care.
Daniel.

Hi John,
With 6 seconds long exposure you got the desired smooth effect on the waterfall, it's pity though your main subject remains hidden in the darkness. In full light it would have had more impact, would as well have been a lot trickier from an exposure pooint of view.
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

Hello John,
what a beauty of the Roughlock waterfalls!I think that the most interest impression is this one and no in the workshop. You 'paused' the running waters with the best manner. The light that falls in the edges of the frame make the photo more realistic.Informative your note too.Well done.

John, you got a perfect balance between the shutter speed and the shutter openning to achieve a silky effect of that waterfall right on spot. Those type of shots sometimes go completetly wrong by overexposing the white parts of the fall. That didn't happen here at all. Partially because the fall is in the sahdow. Despite a lot of other critiquers expressing that you got this image at the wrong moment of the day I like this fragments of sunlight around the fall in the shadow. I don't have the impression that you were on the wrong moment at all.

Olá John, you are the member of the falls. What a wonderful place and this capture of yours has a magical atmosphere that attract me very much. I think that it's problably the sunny leaves around the frame and specially these ones at the bottom FG. The wider view is also nice and giving a better information of the surroundings (doesn't seem o big there), but this tight composition is really good. Congratulations.
Friendly regards,
ricardo
