Small sanctuary, a photo from New York, Northeast

Photographer's Note

There are many lovely churches in Manhattan, and one day I decided to explore St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church on Park Avenue. It was built in the Romanesque style, and opened its doors in 1919. The main sanctuary seats 1300 people and has the largest pipe organ in NYC, but there are also some beautiful smaller spaces to enjoy. Here is one of the small sanctuaries that I found. It was such a peaceful place, and I like the way it was arranged.

Hello Brenda,

The candle makes an exceptionally prominent focal point for the photo. Nonetheless, with an excellent depth of field, you are able to present an effective background. The icon on the wall, the brickwork, the slate floor � all illuminated by light from one side. It's a first class example of photo art.

Hello Brenda, Most churches seem to have that quite peaceful atmosphere, with a soothing effect,regardless on their denomination. I like the composition, even though it took me a little while to work out the bright light was from a candle, not sure what I was thinking of, congratulations, nice light & well managed, good POV and Excellent DOF, with the picture of the Madonna & child clearly visible in the BG. Thanks

Wonderful image.. I like the candle infront and the warm and mystique mood of your picture.. Probably the lamp above is little destructive, but even that the image is really nice!

Nice composition and a warm atmosphere, good for isolation, meditation and praying!
To my delight, I see an Orthodox icon of Theotokos in a Roman Catholic(?) chapel.
