Photographer's Note

Ive walked by this former hotel many times and admired the colorful mural on its fa蓷de. This is the work of Spanish artist Raul Ruiz, also known as El Ni隳 de las Pinturas.

This mural celebrates famed Spanish poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca, who was tragically executed in 1936 at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. He was only 38 years old. It commemorates his poem entitled Sleepless City: Brooklyn Bridge Nocturne, which was written while Garcia Lorca studied in New York City at Columbia University from 1929-1930. He actually had a collection of poems published after his death called Poet in New York

The building is located at the very busy intersection of Canal Street and Lafayette Street, where the neighborhoods of Soho and Chinatown meet.

In the WS is a full view, including other works of art.
