Photographer's Note

I took this photo in Chinatown in New York City. It's a statues of Confucius.

In this photo, you'll note that all 6 women have disconsolate expressions. They look fatigued and tired of the routines of daily life. Only the little boy has a happy expression, curious and hopeful.

I wonder if its the legacy of Confucius, where Chinese women are not valued and must bear the heavy burdens of life, dreary, while men are treated as masters and boys the lords of the future: "Little Emperors".

I'm sorry, I don't mean to offend any Confucians out there. But this photo, I feel, expresses that thought. Of course Confucius himself doesn't look gleeful like the Buddha usually does. He is also bowing his head humbly in sympathy with women's plight.
