Photographer's Note

The unusual cave-like holes in rocks formed by erosion, are called "Tafoni". Found in all climates, especially in interdial areas and deserts. Caused by various geological forces - cementation, differential weathering, salt erosion, structural variations, etc...

The Etymology of the word "Tafoni" is debatable.
It may be Greek from the word Taphos, meaning "tomb". Or Corsican word Taffoni, meaning "windows", or Tafonare, meaning "to perforate". Or perhaps, Sicilian, Tafoni means "Windows".

These Tafoni were 'other worldly' or alien like, along the Oregon coast north of Coos Bay.
