Delicately Standing, a photo from Utah, West

Photographer's Note

We were here just before sunset, hoping to see the last light shinning on the Arch, the sun dip into the dark cloud and never appear again. But the sky makes interesting background and it is still an amazing place to see with or without the sun shinning at it.

Delicate Arch is a 52 feet tall freestanding natural arch located in Arches National Park near Moab, Utah.

It is the most widely-recognized landmark in Arches National Park and is depicted on both Utah license plates and a postage stamp commemorating Utah's centennial anniversary of statehood in 1996. The Olympic torch relay for the 2002 Winter Olympics passed through the arch

At most time of the day, there will always be people standing under the arch trying to take pictures with it. If you want it without people, you will have to be somewhat patient and or go at sunset, where most people wait around to take picture and no one will walk in there without being yell at.

Indeed, the sky with such an picturesque combination of colors is extremely beautiful as a background for this scene. You have seen and composed the image very well based on the rules so the visual effect is very classy and elegant in my opinion. Excellent landscape post as always! Bravo!

Hello Way,
That wonderful arch looks a bit like a natural gate leading to the canyon.
It is amazing how it's formed on the edge of the cliff with a great view through it.
I like the composition in which the arch isn't placed in the center and whereby the big rock at the right provides a good counterbalance.
The different colours of the sky make a splendid backdrop.

You obviously waited for the right moment when you had the arch without any people and a most spectacular sky. You also shot this from a perfect position for a balanced composition where the important elements are given maximum attention. The relatively sparse light is superbly handled.

I saw this in the distance but didn't have the time to walk there and back as I had to be in Green River by sundown. But I was happy just to see delicate arch at all. I uploaded a shot of it but like your version better. Good warm cold color contrasts & superb sharpness and framing. Tfs!

I've said it to you before, your photo's from this location really makes me want to visit there.

A very interesting note too! And i bet the lighting here at mid day is horrible for photos :)
Smart idea to wait until the sunset, and having the cloud coverage really makes a difference in the final product doesn't it!

That really makes me think how millions of years of erosion has created that arch. And how long it will still stand there. Light is still beautiful even without the sun.

The light here is really mesmerizing, Way; I usually expect to see the red rocks of the Utah Desert a bit darker, but here they have a really pleasing cast to them, especially in contrast to the incredible and varied sky.

Arches is a place I really dream of going... Utah in general, I think. I'd love to see Salt Lake City, but from everything I hear, Utah's parks are the finest in the country. Thanks for the tips on getting it alone here.

Once again you show us this oft photographed structure in 'different light'...both literally & figuratively!
The late light creates soft pastel hues, while we see hues of bright orange in a patch in the sky. Exposure well handled there!

This must be a popular spot and much photographed based on your note, what a magnificent view and the spectacular arch that's hard to miss for sure even from miles away. I think you've got the best shooting location and satisfies the rule of the third, it's so very well exposed - being one of the best part imho, despite the low light to get every detail of fascinating rock formation. The colours are so subtle and that glow in the sky is just mouth watering indeed, i think your timing is spot on there. In fact its a previlage to view and truly a life time experience to be up there. Just breathtakingly captivating and you have certainly captured so skilfully. My Compliments! Thanks for sharing.

A great moment! Even without a real sunset, I really like the sky you got and the light is perfect to show such a magical place. I like the way you framed the arch, showing that amazing landscape in background.
Touristic places are always terrible to photograph because of the crowds around.

Hello Way,

Another outstanding shot of the sculptured scenery of Utah. It is incredible to think this is produced by the hand of nature.
You have positioned the archway very strongly in frame, offering two views of the b/g, through or round the arch.
The textures and the hues really are quite amazing.
I imagine it took your breath away seeing this for the first time!

no words to give it a justice. Your gallery is not only a collection of high quality shots but also these are exact the photos which I would like to take and places I would love to visit. Partially I was lucky to see some of them and some of them even after reading your notes.
Beautiful capture here, I have this Delicate Arch in my collection too but I am not entirely happy with the light I had.
I admire your composition and POV which allows to see also some of the very colorful badlands on the other side of the arch. Very impressive and well spotted.
The sky was fantastic and you did a great job using it here.

surely it is standing delicately. Love the way you framed it with a very sharp details of the rocky structure in foreground. Interesting colour tone. Nicely exposed in such a time of sunset with low lights in such areas. Like the yellow tinge in sky. A nice composition where we can see a nice idea of the surrounding beauty. Excellent shot.
