The Capitol is a symmetrical building of the Roman renaissance style and is situated high atop a bluff overlooking the Missouri River. Completed in 1918, it is the third Capitol in Jefferson City's history, and the sixth in Missouri history. Jefferson City's first Capitol burned in 1837 and a second structure, completed in 1840 in the same location as the present building, burned when the dome was struck by lightning in 1911.

Today's Capitol was constructed for $4,215,000, including site and furnishing. It is five stories high, 437 feet (133.2m) long, 300 feet (91.4m) wide in the center and 200 feet (61.0m) wide in the wings. The dome, rising 238 feet (72.5m) above ground and topped by a bronze statue of Ceres, goddess of grain.
