Photographer's Note

The lifting bags or envelopes for hot air balloons are made of lightweight ripstop nylon or polyester. It has to be strong enough to carry the gondola or basket. The fabric is cut into sections as seen in the photo . These sections are called gores. They are cut and sewn into panels with structural load tapes to help carry the weight of the basket. The technique for sewing these panels together is called the French felled. As hot air balloons were first pioneerred in France in the 1780's, many of the modern construction techniques have developed since the 1950's here in the U.S. Most of the envelope is then coated with a sealer like polyurethane to make it impermeable to air.

I think your choice to crop this subject so close really lends a different feel and works quite well. I was immediately drawn to it on the page. The diagonal of the blue squares on the closest balloon draws my eye upwards and makes me really feel the lift of the balloon being inflated in contrast to the vertical lines of the already inflated balloon behind it. Intelligent choice. Beautiful photo!

Hello Karen,

Each of the images in your hot air balloon series surpassing. This detail shot is especially eye catching, in the composition and colors. I see that it was shot only a month ago. When people claim digital photography has not caught up to analogue this photograph could be presented as evidence that it has, in the colors and textures. Besides, it's ultimately the photographer, and not the equipment. I remember many years ago while attending the Nikon School visiting Washington, DC, a world class photographer wowing the crowd. Then he showed us all the Instamatic Camera he had use for the project.
